Peter PAUL, MA (Adelaide), DEA (Grenoble), PhD (Monash)

Born in Silesia (now Western Poland) in 1936, Peter PAUL arrived in Australia late 1955. Completing (S.A.) Leaving in 1957, he subsequently enrolled for a B.A. at the University of Adelaide, graduating with twin honours in French and German in 1962. Continuing to work full-time, he enrolled for a Master's degree (by research), and in July 1965 presented his M.A. thesis (a descriptive study of Barossa German ).

Following three years of language teaching, he accepted a French Government Scholarship in 1968, and enrolled for a Doctorat du Troisième Cycle at the Institute for Phonetics and Linguistics, University of Grenoble.

Given the turbulent situation in the French universities at that time, he decided to return to Australia, having been granted the Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies.

The academic years 1970 and 1971 saw him on the staff of the Department of German, University of Queensland, before he joined the Department of Linguistics, Monash University in January 1972.

Upon his arrival at Monash, he enrolled as a staff candidate for the degree of Ph.D. Using a then still very novel computer- assisted methodology for his data analysis, he pursued his research on Verb Valency in French and German, while carrying out his duties as a full-time staff member.

Over the next 26 years, he regularly lectured courses ranging from Phonetics (articulatory and acoustic) to Syntax, from Linguistics for language learning to Current issues in computational linguistics and from Language change and language contact (comparative and historical linguistics) to Morphology.

Having accepted voluntary early retirement in 1999, he retained a close contact with the Department as Honorary Research Associate, while at the same time being also involved, as a Visiting Professor, with the establishment of a Master's Program in Linguistics at Indonesia's Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan.

A foundation member of the Australian Linguistics Society, he served the Society as Associate Secretary and Editor of the Society's Newsletter (1988-96).

He officially retired on 31.12.2001.
