An Original Aussie Jean's Knitting Pattern

FREE HALLOWEEN WITCH DOLL KNITTING PATTERN

(For experienced knitters only - Knitted on 2 needles)

Materials:
In 8ply/(UK.DK)(USA.WW) allow 25grms(1oz) Black: 12grms(1/2oz) Dark Green; 12grms(1/2oz) Medium Green; 12grms (1/2.oz) Red. (Aus.3mm)(USA No.2) knitting needles; 1 x 2.1/2" dia. circle of thick cardboard for base and suitable glue to stick the knitted base to the cardboard circle. Child safe toy stuffing. Sewing up needle.

Tension & Size:
Worked at a tension of 26 stitches and 36 rows to 10 x 10cm over stocking stitch, using No.11(3mm) needles throughout. Height: From base to top of hat 23cms (9").

Abbreviations:
K, knit; p, purl; st(sts), stitch, stitches; sl, slip; tog, together; inc, increase (by working twice into same st); dec, decrease (by taking 2 sts tog); ss, stocking stitch (k on right side and p on wrong side); psso, pass slipped stitch over; skpo, (slip1, knit1, pass slipped stitch over); ytb, yard to back of work. Coloured marker: use a small length of yarn that is a different colour from the yarn you are using at the moment; NR: next row; Cast off: bind off.

BODY: (make 1 piece)
Starting at base edge and working towards the top of head and using dark green yarn, cast on 40sts and ss2 rows.
Join in red yarn and ss2 rows.
Continuing in 2 rows green and 2 rows red stripes ss32 rows.
Shape for shoulders: K4, (k2tog) six times, k8, (k2tog) six times, k4 (28sts).
NR: P4, (p2tog) three times, p8, (p2tog) three times, P4 (22sts).
Ss2 rows.
Head: Break off dark green and red yarn and join in medium green yarn and ss2 rows.
NR: K2, inc, in each st to last two sts, k2 (40sts).
Starting with a purl row, ss17 rows.
Shape for top of head:
1st dec, row: (K3, k2tog) to end of row (32sts). Purl every alternate row.
2nd dec, row: (K2, k2tog) to end of row (24sts).
3rd dec, row: (K1, k2tog) to end of row (16sts).
4th dec, row: (K2tog) to end of row (8sts). Leaving a long end, break off yarn and thread through sts and put aside.

BASE: (make 1 piece)
Using dark green yarn, cast on 40sts and starting with a purl row, ss3 rows.
4th row: (K3, k2tog) to end of row (32sts).
5th row: Purl.
6th row: (K2, k2tog) to end of row (24sts).
7th row: Purl.
8th row: (K1, k2tog) to end of row (16sts).
9th row: Purl.
10th row: (K2tog) to end of row (8sts).
11th row: Purl.
Leaving a long end, break off yarn and thread through stitches. Pull up yarn tightly and oversew row edges together to cast on row.

ARMS: (make 2 pieces)
Starting at the top of arm and using dark green yarn, cast on 6sts and ss2 rows.
Join in red yarn and inc, 1st, at beg, of next 2 rows (8sts).
Continuing in 2 rows dark green and 2 rows red 2 row stripes, Inc, 1st, at beg, of next 2 rows (10sts).
Cast on two sts, at beg, of next 2 rows (14sts).
Ss13 rows.
NR: P1, (p2tog) 6 times, P1, (8sts).
Break off dark green and red yarn and join in medium green yarn and ss5 rows.
NR: (P2tog, p2) twice (6sts).
Leaving a long end, break off yarn and thread through sts, and set piece to one side.

CLOAK: (make 1 piece)
Using black yarn, cast on 24sts and knit one row.
NR: Continuing in garter st, (knit) cast off 2sts, knitwise, at beg, of next two rows to form the collar, (20sts).
NR: K2, (inc, in each of the next 16sts, k2 (36sts).
NR: K3, purl to last 3sts, k3.
NR: K8, (inc, in next two sts) k16, (inc, in next two sts) k8, (40sts).
NR: K3, purl to last 3sts, k3.
NR: K9, (inc, in next two sts) k18, (inc, in next two sts) k9, (44sts).
NR: K3, purl to last 3sts, k3.
NR: K10, (inc, in next two sts) k20, (inc, in next two sts) k10, (48sts).
NR: K3, purl to last 3sts, k3.
NR: K11, (inc, in next two sts) k22, (inc, in next two sts) k11, (52sts).
Continuing throughout with the k3 edges on the purl row, ss31 rows.
Knit 4 rows. Cast off all sts.

HAT: (make 1 piece)
Using black yarn, cast on 36sts and purl one row.
NR: (Inc, k3) to end of row (45sts).
Starting with a purl row, ss2 rows.
NR: Knit. (Brim edge row)
Starting with a knit row, ss3 rows.
NR: (P2tog, p3) to end of row (36sts).
Starting with a knit row, ss6 rows.
1st dec, row: K1, (K2tog, k3) to end of row (29sts).
Starting with a purl row, ss5 rows.
2nd dec, row: K1, (K2tog, k2) to end of row (22sts).
Starting with a purl row, ss5 rows.
3rd dec, row: K1, (k2tog, k1) to end of row (15sts).
Starting with a purl row, ss5 rows.
4th dec, row: K1, (K2tog) to end of row (8sts). Leaving a long end, break off yarn and thread through sts.

Making up:
Body: Pull up stitches tightly and sew row edges together to cast on row. Turn body so that the right side of work is facing outwards and stuff body firmly. The head should measure 15.5cms (6.1/4" around and the waist should measure 19.5cms (7.5/8") around.
Base: Glue the cardboard circle to the wrong side of the knitted base piece and placing a weight on the cardboard, leave until glue is dry. When the glue has dried oversew the cast on row of body and the cast on row of base together adding extra stuffing if required.
Neck: Thread your sewing needle with a length of medium green yarn and work a row of running stitches around the first row of the head. Pull up stitches to shape neck and sew in ends.
Arms: Pull up stitches tightly and sew row ends together to the cast on 2sts row.
Stuff arms with filling and sew arms to body at the decrease for shoulders rows, matching stripes.
Hair: Using red yarn, cut 56 x 20cms (8") lengths. Bundle the strands in bunches of 4 and lay across head. Oversew the centre of strands (bundle of 4) to the head starting at the 3rd dec, row of the front of head and working towards the neck at the back until all 56 strands have been used.
Hat: Pull up stitches tightly and sew row ends together to cast on edge. With the wrong side of work facing you, turn the hat brim over at the knit brim edge row and sew the cast on row of hat to the wrong side of work. Turn hat so that the right side of work is facing you. Stuff the top of hat lightly to shape it and place hat on head. Sew hat to head through the row above the brim. Trim hair to shape.
Facial features: (See photo for placement).
Eyes: Leaving a gap of 3sts between eyes and using black yarn work a daisy stitch in one stitch and work a second daisy stitch around the first st. Sew in end.
Nose: Using black yarn, work a long stitch two stitches wide 2 rows down and in the center of eyes.
Mouth: Using black yarn work mouth in chain stitches, 6sts wide and starting on the 2nd row down from nose.
Cloak: Place cloak on doll and oversew the ends of the collar together.
