Quake World Championship |
| - |
Due to a decreasing interest in the game and the growing impost in updating the webpage, QWC Quake World Championships is now closed. The titles of various Quake world champions as honoured by QWC will be rescinded ready for a new organisation to take over and QWC will honour its most prolific winners of its various titles as QWC Legends.

Rules governing all QWC Championships:
* Only one (1) championship battle is allowed within a 12 hour time period. If
the championship holders refuse to accept that challenge, the championship proceeds
without them.
* Players must use conspicuous models. Models with predominant shades of brown, grey or
any dark colours are banned.
* Lighting, in system graphics options, must be set to "lighting", not
"vertex".
* The BFG weapon is banned. Any competitor using it is immediately disqualified for
that QC.
* Any participant that refuses to compete or complete in any part of a championship is
disqualified.
* Any game command that requires access to the console or is indeed a console command must
be approved by all competitors before activation. Anyone using such a command is
immediately disqualified from the QC.
* Unless an individual championship's rules state otherwise, in the event of a
disqualification, a player must leave the game immediately and the map is restarted.
Quake World Championship rules:
* Matches are melee-style and first to 20 frags.
* Minimum of three players are required to start a championship.
* 10 maps are played, selected by each player in rotation. A player cannot select
the same map twice.
* In the scenario where not all players have an equal number of map selections, priority
for further selection is given to players with the highest ranking from the previous QWC.
If that cannot be determined, a selector is drawn randomly.
* If there are less than 5 players in QWC, once each player has made two map selections,
"hardcore" difficulty bots can be included in subsequent map selections provided
the total number of players and bots does not exceed the designed maximum for the map.
* Maps must be officially sanctioned QWC maps as appears on the table below. Each
combatant's selection can contain only one non-official Q3A map and must contain at least
one official Q3A map.
* Combatant with the most maps won is declared the winner. He becomes Quake World Champion
and retains that title until the next QWC is played.
* In the event of a tie, countback is used. Still tied, and the defending champion selects
a sudden death map, which must be different to his previous two selections, where the
highest ranked tied-combatant according to frag count at the completion of the map is
declared winner. If still tied, the champion keeps selecting a new map until the tie
is broken.
* In the event of an "act of God" event such as flood, earthquake, or network
breakdown that forces the termination of the QWC, the QWC will be deemed completed if each
player has had at least one map selection completed, or 50% of the championship has been
completed, whichever is the greater.
* Note that combatants are listed according to rankings from the previous championship.
* The QWC committee comprises of Simo, Bob, Roizo and the UKKK.
Official QWC Maps (determined to be sufficiently fair and familiar by the QWC
committee):
Any offical Quake 3 Arena map.
Any "Pro" map from an offical update. A "P" refers to a Pro map
where icons are the same.
Simo City.
Map of Z.

The most competitive QWC ever. While Simo and Bob won four maps each, the UKKK came second in 6 maps, with Royboy winning one and often challenging for the lead in others. Except for the last map, all maps had close finishes with three having the second place-getter on 19 frags. Helps that all B-Boys had decent machines to play on. However, it was Simo's early run that proved insurmountable, even with Bob's cheating. In declaring Simo had it won before playing the final map, the B-Boys relaxed had some fun, which allowed Bob to steamroll through, leaving Simo languishing in last place on just 2 frags. Thankfully for Simo and the integrity of the competition, he was ahead on countback with two second placings to just one of Bob's. Only disappointment was Z being a soft-cock wowser and failing to show, as this QWC proved to be the last played ever and it would have been nice to have a five-way battle as a finale.

With Roy missing, Z participated in his first QWC for ages. Fear was that someone could gain some cheap Z-frags and therefore a cheap QWC victory, but facts are that a total strategic f*ck up helped Bob cruise through this lopsided QWC. With Simo thinking the UKKK had one frag for victory on Bouncy, he focused all attack on the UKKK, which allowed Bob to scab his way to victory with Rail pings and scabs. Fine, but then on Retri, the UKKK - out of contention on the map - elected to aid Simo winning to keep the championship alive for himself. All was going well but Simo could not just finish it off and stalled on 19. Thinking he could, the UKKK re-engaged all combatants to try and still second spot, but actually denied Simo a winning frag and then made himself the final fragee for Bob! That's f-ing f-ed! Simo's inconsistency returned for the second Retri, so the UKKK had no choice but to win to keep in touch. While he narrowly missed by 2 frags, it got even worse for all combatants when Simo single-handedly destroyed the UKKK's hopes in the first Klesk level with a series of cheap respawn frags that allowed Bob to close the UKKK's lead. Having said that, the UKKK had every chance to finish off but missed too many rail shots. Once Bob won the next Klesk level, he was assured of victory by simply playing to avoid anyone the scenario of someone winning the five-straight maps that was required just to put the QWC into a countback situation.

Defending champion, the UKKK, got off to a slow start, though, with some luck, could have started by winning the first 3. He led for most of Bouncy before losing the plot and suiciding. Hero's Keep was another similar story with 8 suicides costing him dearly. Then he almost stole Retribution after a final scrimmage involving himself, Roy and Simo. He needed to frag both, but the fight against Roy reduced his health so far that he was easy pickings for Simo. However, he took the next two maps to get back into the race. From then on, all players other than Roizo managed to win their own selections, which ultimately saw the title decided on Bob's final selection. With so many close matches for the UKKK, he was way ahead on countback, so a victory would have won him the championship. But suicide-itis caught the UKKK again, and along with Bob being allowed to camp too long on the far platform for some easy rail frags, the UKKK finished the map in second. While it seems a hard-luck story for the UKKK, truth is that Bob did win on merit and deserved the victory. The UKKK had stolen previous QWCs in fortuitous circumstances, and would have been injustice to Bob had he done it again.
As for Simo and Roy, well, another sorry tale. For all Simo's bluster, his performances are dire. With Roizo, while his improved computer certainly saw him more competitive, he still trailed badly against the leaders. Suppose the positive is that at least now he can look forward to finishing overall ahead of Simo!
A side issue to this QWC was the unveiling of Bob's and the UKKK's new performance stats generator that provided previously unattainable stats like shot accuracy and damage/kill ratios. As suspected, the king of armour and health hoarding, Bob, worked least for his kills and proved hardest to kill. Unexpectedly, however, accuracy only showed a slight edge to the renowned rail-maestro, the UKKK. But then, the UKKK did spend most of the weekend whingeing about not being able to hit anyone. Nag, nag, nag.

Simo made his customary good start, but the QWC was eventually to be fought out between Bob and the UKKK. The critical maps turned out to be the Camping Grounds and Temple of Retribution - maps that the UKKK had not performed well in four-player QWCs. Most of his previous victories in those maps were due to the extra player of Z participating, which reduces the strategy and increases the chaos factors respectively and making it more fragadelic for the UKKK's style of play. The QWC went down to the final map, but with the UKKK scoring several second placings, Bob not only had to win, but hope that the UKKK finished low for a countback to be worthwile. Instead, he crumpled in a heap to finish last with just 6 frags, whilst the UKKK ditched his usual railgun predilection (because he was in such crap form with it) and went berserk with plasma to win the QWC with a commanding victory.

It was always going to be difficult for anyone else to win once the UKKK won the first four maps. Even with the others judicially picking maps not favoured by the UKKK, any variety in the victors would see the UKKK's grip on the title tighten as opportunities to catch the UKKK's lead would diminished. That's exactly what happened when Bob and Simo split the next four maps. With UKKK picking up two second placings, it meant he could not be beaten outright and would be very difficult to beat in a countback situation. Not only that, he was in the position to influence the outcome of the final two matches by throwing frags to the more distant rivals so as to prevent any competitor reaching four victories. That's a potential flaw in the current format, which could be exploited one day. A first to a specific number of victories format would reduce the effect of throwing frags, but with anything less than five (which is probably too many), it would have actually seen this championship over very early. Anyway, it all proved immaterial in the end when the UKKK won his final pick.
While the UKKK's total was high, as usual, the individual map battles were close. He only just held off Simo in the Map of Z by one frag, and, after clearing out to a nice lead with his typically annoying long range railing, won Simo City by two over Bob. On the other hand, he did have a chance to win Space Chamber, but missed his rocket target of Simo and blew himself instead. This allowed Bob, who'd led comfortably for most of the map, to regain composure and win.

For the second time in a row, a QWC was abandoned, but his time for the seemingly legitimate reason of it already being won! UKKK was actually leading 4-2 over Bob, but it was believed they were tied at three a piece, with Simo on two. On what should have been the penultimate level played, Bob and the UKKK were level on 19 frags, but only after a moth attacked the UKKK during the map and cost him a couple of frags! If the Duckworth-Lewis system for moth interrupted Quake battles had been invoked, the UKKK's frag-limit would have been lowered to 19, and he'd have been declared the winner.
Anyway, the UKKK, rallied back, and looked set to win when pounding into Simo with plasma. However, he ran out of ammo, and though he continued to spray fire with the machine gun, Bob intervened and scabbed the Simo frag to win the map. Simo, now mathematically out of contention, then spat the dummy and refused to play the final match because Royboy cheated by self-destructing and denying Simo a frag.
With Bob now supposedly leading 4-3, the UKKK obviously wanted to play on in a hope to tie, and tried to encourage Simo to rejoin after Roy would be disqualified. In this time, Bob, however, checked the second placings to determine the countback situation. The UKKK then concurred that Bob would win on countback, and though he still wanted to play on just for the fun of it, there seemed little point or enthusiasm from anyone else.
The administrative error was picked up the next day when the above table was updated. Thankfully, the rules brought in to cover the previous abandonment, were sufficient to cope with this situation as well.
You'd think the loss would be the pits for Bob, but it paled next to the fact that in the inaugural QWC League, Bob lost (that's LOST) to Z, 10-9. Maybe Bob, after losing to Z, realised second best was now his destiny and then simply became preoccupied with the second placings. Hence, that's why he only checked them.
Other than that drama, this QWC was noted for the fact that two maps were selected for the first time ever: Bob won his selection of Proving Grounds easily, whilst the UKKK won Simo's selection of the House Of Pain. The rarely played Vertical Vengeance saw the UKKK just triumph over Bob's selection by two frags, whilst on the Bouncy Map, Bob returned the favour on the UKKK's selection. Other than Arena Gate, all other maps saw clear victories, with Simo absolutely destroying everyone on Simo City. Thanks the copious use of invisibility by Simo, everyone else finished with just six frags.

This turned out to be a debacle when Roy started killing himself using a console command bound to a key and denying Bob frags. Clearly unfair, two options were presented: continue playing but only if Roy played seriously; or continue playing without Roy. Simo refused to condone either, and preferred to only continue with Roy still in the game and ruining the integrity of the QWC. Simo felt that Roy's tactics were totally fair. He then re-entered the paused game and started fragging the motionless Bob and UKKK, whom were still trying to negotiate a resolution. That ruined any chance of continuing the game even if a resolution was found. If his stance on supporting Roy cheating was not enough to prevent the UKKK and Bob continuing the game, then his deliberate action of contaminating the game in progress did.
Clearly, Simo's role was pivotal in abandoning the QWC. Regardless of whether his actions were genuinely representative of what he deems fair, it must be pointed out that the abandonment actually benefitted him the most. As current champion, he was trailing overall as well as on the abandoned map. His odds of extending his QWC reign looking terminal. Therefore, an abandonment served his interests perfectly because it preserved his title of Quake World Champion.
That still left a mess of an abandoned QWC. With no rules at the time legislating on such an event, a decision was made for a rule to be created that would not only cover the current situation, but also to set a precedent for the future. The QWC was deemed to have been completed, whilst Simo was disqualified. Official placings: Bob, UKKK, Royboy, Simo.

Actually a comfortable victory for Simo, despite it going to countback. Even there, he had five second placings to Bob's three. Simo should have won Brimstone Abbey, but saw the UKKK steal it right at the death. The UKKK stumbled upon a dropped invisibility and went on a quick four-frag rampage to gain his first victory on this map. And Bob's late run would have been meaningless had he not stolen The Nameless Place at the death. He, the UKKK and Simo were all on 19, and as the UKKK and Simo fought it out with rockets flying everywhere, Bob came from behind scabbed the UKKK's Simo-kill. For the defending champion, the UKKK, his accuracy skills were off and really was never in it.
