UKKK says: Cybernet seem to have gone for games high on innovation and fun, which should be applauded. Interesting omitions are Quake 3 and Unreal T.  Maybe they were too late? But if that was the case, surely Zelda 64 would have made the list as that game came out later in its year than what either shooter - especially UT - did this year.  Maybe they weren't good, or at least innovative, enough?  Interestingly, the UKKK only has games 1, 2 & 10)

Game Developer Favourites

Gabe Newell - Designer for Valve, makers of Half Life (Source: Cybernet, 01/01)
1) Super Mario 64 (N64) : Inspiring design, played 4 times completely and enjoys even more each time.  Also depressing in that SM64 designer Shigeru Miyamoto design capabilities are so strong.   Hopes one day to even have 10% of his abilities.
2) Dues Ex (PC): Unique by merging first person action with RPG.  Playing 10 times can give you 10 different experiences.
3) Ultima Underworld (PC): Convinced him to become a games designer.  Complicated, interesting and immersive worlds convinced him that games could one day take over from TV and movies as the mainstream entertainment.
4) Civilation (PC): Gone mad on planes if not for Civ; seeing what was going to happen next was a fav moment.
5) Doom (PC): First time felt afraid playing a computer game, especially in not wanting to go around corners.
David Dienstbien - Turok Dinosaur Hunter Series (Source: Cybernet, 10/00)
1) Zelda 64 (N64): After waiting for 6 years for the next Zelda game, totally awestruck with it
2) Mario 64 (N64): Most important game in 5 years as it broke the mould for 3D gaming and is still the best of its type

Peter Molineux - Populous, Theme Park, Black & White (Source: Cybernet, 4/00)

1) Civ, PC: Astounding AI, each game differenent, much longetivity.
2) Doom, PC: Dark, frenetic, brillinat levels and foes, and controversial. Invnented core concpets and associated language - deathmatch, gibs, strafing, etc.
3) Dune 2, Amiga/PC: First real RTS to which all others descended
4) Elite, Multi-platform: Space trading and shooting that embroiled you.
5) EverQuest, PC: Made RPGs Multiplayer
6) IK+, C64/Amiga: Defined the fighting genre. 4-player too.
7) Internatinal Soccer, C64: Captured the magical simplicity of computer game soccer. Excellent AI that was fun, though not realistic in simulating the real game.
8) Starsiege Tribes, PC: Possibly the ultimate net MP game
9) Ultima IV, multi: Best version of the classic RPG series
10) Zork, multi: Highly involving text based adventure game

UKKK says: these are obviously landmark games that defined a genre.  Games have come a long way since the likes of IK+ - a simple karate game - and surely Quake or Half Life kills Doom?)

Websites

Best PlayStation games ever (Source: IGNPSX, 6/2000)
1) Metal Gear Solid: Innovative, suspenseful and an experience not to forget. simply a work of art.  You never finished the game; you finished it multiple times.
2) Castlevania Symphony of the Night: Perfect gameplay and control, graphics and especially sound.  Testament to the fact that 2D games never should die.  I agree.  Super Metroid, anyone?
3) Gran Turismo 2: Huge leap over original.  Superb physiques, and enormous variety in choice of cars and driving modes.  It has it all and is simply the greatest driving game ever created
4) Tony Hawk Pro Skater: Turned a general that seem incapable of producing even a good game, into one of the most playable, addictive, and long lasting games ever.
5) Resident Evil 2: Pinnacle of a series that again defined and perfected a genre.

22) Lunar Silver Star Story Complete: 32bit update of a classic 16bit RPG
23) Final Fantasy Tactics: Turn based stragety game that lasted for 100s of hours
24) Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo: Most addictive puzzle game since Tetris, and might be better
25) Tenchu Stealth Assassins: Brought authentic, hardcore assassin style that required stealth

UKKK says: Probably too top heavy with RPGs, and the lack of other sports outside US is a worry. The ISS series is universally recognised for its realism. And FIFA games have sold heaps.  Colin McRae and TOCA, kill Ridge Racer series.  Suppose a legacy of a US site, they miss.

Best Nintendo 64 games ever (Source: IGN64, 6/2000)
1) Zelda Ocaria of Time: True feat of game design that gels to form an unforgettable quest.  Wide open environment points, impressive.  Graphics, haunting sound, immaculate control, intuitive camera control.  Words cannot really describe it.  One of gaming's finest moments.

3) Perfect Dark: Sequel to GE that again revolutionised the genre on consoles.   Deathmatch received most work and is the most comprehensive ever in terms of gameplay and options.
4) GoldenEye 007: Propelled the genre forward, instruduce quality deathmatch on consoles, and until its sequel, the definitive FPS.  Greats story, sound and realism.
5) Excitebike 64: 20 varied tracks, phenomenal visuals, great control & design, plus the original!
6) Wave Race 64: Defined and perfected a genre in one hit.  Ambitious 3D graphics, incredible physics, finely tuned controls and impeccable track design. A true experience.
7) Banjo Kazooie: Huge worlds, luscious grahpics, great characters in this enormous platformer
8) Tony Hawk Pro Skater: Best version of remarkable PS game.  Rock solid control & gameplay
9) Rayman 2: Vividly detailed 3D worlds, smooth and silky gameplay, near flawless design
10) International Superstar Soccer 98: Beats Fifa with silky smooth gameplay and control.   Realistic goal scoring and captured the beauty of the game
11) Super Smash Bros: Underrated, addictive and outstanding in multi-player
12) WWF Wrestlemania 2000: Best ever wrestling, anywhere, period. The most replay value.
13) Ridge Racer 64: Best of the series on any system - very fast and smooth
14) Madden NFL 99: Best looking with great animation. Tough and only for the hardcore

15) 1080 Snowboarding: Control, graphics, the best of its type ever
16) Mario Kart 64: Flawed in SP - too easy, and MP - too random, but supreme fun all round
17) All Star Baseball 2001: Best version of the best ever Baseball game.  Phenomenal graphics
19) NHL 99: Best of the series
20) Jet Force Gemini:  Great action is this innovative third person shooter. Pity about the difficulty
21) Blast Corps: Gameplay variety, tense and additive in a highly original title
22) Space Station Silicon Valley: Ride cyborg animals in space.  Original, great controlling, great level design and another underrated platformer
23) Mario Golf: Makes the most boring game, fun. Addictive and surprisingly realistic.
24) Rocket Robot on Wheels: Main character racee around worlds on his unicycle using gravity and inertia in this underrated platformer with an oustanding physics engine.
25) Harvest Moon 64: Unique farming sim!  Very addictive and deep

UKKK says: Not much wrong with this list.  World Driver and F1WGP - almost the best F1 game ever - surprised by not making it. Both certainly better than RR64.  Wipeout 64, which some say is better than WOXL that made the PS top 10, did not make it. F-ZeroX, which is better than WO64, missed.  No Diddy Kong Racing, which was certainly better overall than, or at least equal to, to MK64.  Platformers got a good run, but no Donkey Kong? No Starfox/Lylat Wars - an outstanding space shooter.  Or even Rogue Squadron, for its sound graphics and solid gameplay?
