Wipeout 2097
08/09/97
9 9 9 10 9 Weapons can make it a bit random - especially the new auto-pilot - but they can be turned off.    Otherwise, basically flawless except for maybe lack of tracks and a 2-player mode.
Ridge Racer
17/10/97
8 7 6 5 5 Launch title that I bought late on.  Obviously superceded in all areas.  While it may play great, having only one real track is beyond a joke.
Rapid Racer
03/11/97
05/12/98*
6 7 9 5 6 Grossly over rated game that played ordinarily.  Once you played N64's WaveRace, coming to this was painful.  "Solid" water makes the game feel like racing cars on a rough road. Nauseating announcer too.

Castlevania
04/01/98
9 8 8 10 9 Continues the fantastic 2D experience founded on the NES and SNES with fantastic gameplay, moody graphics and an awesome score. 3D not necessary!
TOCA
27/04/98
9 7 7 8 8 Probably over touchy controls, especially when wet, but still very realistic.   The racing is what excels and is extremely rewarding.
Colony Wars
27/04/98
8 7 9 9 8 Proves the PS can do an X-Wing type game.  Immersive presentation sets the mood for immersive gameplay.  Control could be better as it is hard to line up targets and your craft seems devoid of speed.
Gran Turismo
10/05/98
9 9 10 10 9 Easily the best driving game ever created and the pack style racing works a treat.  Ultra realistic and unique control for literally hundreds of cars.   Only the lack of a bonnet cam making collision detection a bit iffy, and that crashing does not wipe off enough speed to punish the villian, stops it get a perfect mark.
Fifa World Cup
30/05/98
6 5 9 9 6 Yes, a good game overall, but again the poor passing game and AI on defence and offence still makes for a muddling, random game.  The killer presentation is all it has, and is the only reason I bought it.
Colin McRae Rally
17/08/98
9 10 8 8 9 Amazing, an ultra realistic rally game in control and gameplay - you actually race rallies with navigators and against the clock.  As with TOCA, the graphics are nothing special, but the gameplay is.  A must.
Point Blank
08/09/98
8 9 7 7 8 Fantastic gun game, that is ultra accurate.  Billions of sub games and great character.  Topped off with a brilliant 2-player mode.

Street FighterEX
08/06/99
8 6 8 8 7 SF2 into 3D dissappoints somewhat - mainly the fiddly controls. Still plays in 2D, but moves seem so hard to perform.  Doubt it is the pad, as other PS SF2s are fine. Could be the view? Stick to 2D, like Alpha 3, or SF2 originals.
Wipeout 3
17/09/99
8 8 9 7 8 Uses the analog, which seems to hurt the game, making it seem easier.   Again, only 8 tracks, and what is there, seem to have many corners reminiscient of past tracks.  Split screen now.  8 (up from 4) vehicle types.  Turbo function adds some strategy as it takes from your shield. Graphic detail reduced, to allow for even more speed and smoothness.  Music is weakish. Probably now the best version, althought, the N64 version still plays and controls the best.

Gran Turismo 2*
29/01/2000
10 10 10 8 10 More of everything, plus a rally mode.  Niggles from the first still remain - there must be a bonnet view and crashing should be punished more.   However, 2-player races don't seem as close anymore which suggest there may have been some catch-up logic in the original.  This game has it, but it can be turned off.  Menus could be improved, as you can't retry races without going back to the menu in GT mode - loading times come in.  While the game is not that much an improvement over the original, the rallying, extra tracks, and refined handling make it the best ever.
ISS Pro Evolution*
09/03/2000
9 7 8 5 8 Not as fluid as the N64 ISS games, and there simply are not enough options.  AI problems when going forward does not help either and feels sluggish.   PS media rave about it, but needs refinement.
Wipeout 3 SE
27/07/2000
8 8 9 7 9 Wipeout 3, except with several extra tracks, all borrowed from WO and WO2.   More tournaments and game modes, plus a cockpit view, which whilst making it harder to play, is awesome.  Some still say WO2 is better - especially in presentation with sound and feel - but this has to be the definitive version.  And, if you don't like analog control, use d-pad.
Street Fighter Alpha 3
09/12/2000
10 9 10 9 10 The definitive SF2.  It's the PS controller's stiff d-pad that hurts the control - that's not the game's fault.  I prefer 2D to 3D fighting games anyday too. There's just so much more strategy.

ISS 9 9 9 9 9 Conversion of N64's ISS 2000.  Proves the sluggish feel in the ISS Pro/Evo games are not hardware related.  The stiffer d-pad used here actually seems to help in reducing the responsiveness from the N64.  Slight downer includes the load times (obviously) and maybe AI is not quite 100% faithful.
