Australia Cup
14 January 2002: Matildas Edge Out Korea
A three match series against Korea constituted this year's Australia Cup.
The Matildas were the deserved 1-0 winners in the first clash. Substitute April Mann
scored the solitary goal midway through the second half in a game largely dominated by the
Australians.
Australia: Nichols, Wainwright, Salisbury, Tann, Bartlett, Davies
(Thomson 67), Rockall (Garriock 63), Forman (c), Peters, Black (Golebiowski 77),
Casagrande (Mann 50).

close match, although Korea created a good number of promising attacks in what became a
bruising and passionate encounter. Peter's scored on 32 minutes after a Korean
defender tripped over the ball. The match was later marred when Korea threatened to
walk of the pitch following an incident involving captain Forman that Korea felt warranted
at least a yellow card.

April 2002: Matildas come up just short
The Australian women's national team battled out a goalless draw against Canada
in its opening match at the four-team tournament in France. The Matildas defended
bravely for much of the match with Canadian star Charmaine Hooper the most dangerous
player on the park. Defenders Bridgette Starr and Kate McShea and midfielder Joanne
Peters were the pick of the bunch for the Matildas.
Results: Australia 0 - Canada 0; France 1 - Japan 0.
In the second match, Kelly Golebiowski volleyed home the
opener for Australia on 31 minutes after a free kick from Joanne Peters. Australia
should have wrapped up the game but was punished for its lack of finishing during the
match in the final minute of play. A free kick from wide on the right found Kasajima
unmarked in the box and she made no mistake with the volley from close range.
Results: Australia 1 - Japan 1; Canada 2- France 0.
After Japan did both Australia and France a favour when
they defeated when they defeated highly rated Canada 3-2, an Australian win would give
them the tournament victory. However, the Australian's lost 1-0 to leave them bottom
of the ladder. The loss was Australia's first in a full international under coach
Adrian Santrac, after five wins and three draws from his first eight games in charge.
France scored the vital goal in the 37th minute as star striker Marinette Pichon, who
recently became France's first signing in the American professional league, burst past the
last defender and slotted the ball home from a narrow angle. Australia came close to
drawing level in the 61st minute but Joanne Peters strike skimmed the crossbar.
However, the French held on and clinched the silverware on home soil.
