Dr Virginia Lowe and the artist Jacqui Young started CReATe a kids’ book in 1997, conducting workshops once a month. This soon developed into an assessment service (specifically manuscripts written for children), and has since broadened into online courses as well. There is also a fortnightly bulletin on writing, with tips, competitions, news on publishers and children's literature events. Virginia, who has lectured at university, been a Judge for the CBCA annual awards, written extensively on children's responses to books, and been around children's books for many years, sees herself as something of a clearing house for people interested in the world of books for kids.
Workshops: Would you like to create a book for children? Possibly a picture book? Or perhaps a novel for older children or adolescents? CReATe a kids’ book offers a one-day workshop, under the guidance of two experienced and enthusiastic children's book people, Dr. Virginia Lowe (words) and Jo Thompson (illustrations). They will work with you on the creation of your story and advise on presentation for submission to a publisher. Workshops on novel writing (fantasy, YA and short “chapter books”) with Virginia and novelist Jennifer Dabbs are also available. Between them, our tutors have a wealth of knowledge about the history of children's literature and contemporary literary theory, as well as a solid understanding of the Australian publishing scene. Previous participants have found the workshop is conducive to creativity and have acknowledged the value of sharing stories and techniques with others, as well as benefiting from the individual attention of the tutors. Many of them return time and time again (see the successess). Book your place in a workshop today. Manuscript assessments: written for all levels of children, tots to teens - assessed with every page read and commented on. American Manuscripts: Our assessor Marlo Garnsworthy is currently living in the USA. She has had several books accepted for publication there, and will be assessing manuscripts for all ages of children, bringing to the task her knowledge of the US market E-Courses: Sign up for one of our e-courses on creating kids' books and illustrations. NEW! Two new courses on novel writing and on illustration! E-Bulletin: Virginia writes a bulletin roughly once a fortnight, on children’s books and writing – reviews, commentary, events, writing tips and other relevant material. There is an administrative cost of $30 annually. Contact Virginia to be added to the Subscription List. Australia-wide details of events and competitions, opportunities, and publisher details for all children’s writers and illustrators, can be found at Pass it On This is contributor-run, and many well known authors read it and give replies. See the books that have been published with the help of CReATe a kids’ book , and the words of their satisfied authors and illustrators at successess. |
