Manya Vaptsarova
Graphics, Illustration and Painting Artist

The art of Manya Vaptzarova has its genealogy in the European artistic tradition. It is related to the figurative composition and the portrait, to the classical techniques of the art of painting, drawing, and metal engraving.

Her artistic imagery is inspired by a creative dialogue with the old art of portraiture of masters such as Holbein, Durer and Hals. The images in her kind of art are imbued with authorship, duplicated by a new spatial close-up version and are updated from a modern point of view. Her images are of people endowed with eternal youth of simple mortality. They can age, lose their flesh and become ghosts. They can also transform themselves with imperishable beauty into eternal ideal entities. That is the allegory which Manya Vaptzarova discloses for the art, its essence and meaning.

Her characters have dropped their "masks" which quite often cover "metaphorically" the images in the Bulgarian works of art of the 80's. They appear like mere inventions from the world of art in which the artist wanders mentally and aesthetically. Her works are not mere portraits or portrait compositions. They are artistic "metaboles" of characters and ghosts from the Shakesperian theatre of life. They are images exciting with their new touch for art in the art itself, addressed entirely to psychology and the human soul, where all things are so vulnerable and spiritually uplifted.
