Terrence Alan "Spike" Milligan
Born - 16 April, 1918. Died - 27 February, 2002
What can I say about a man who has left his mark on the face of comedy around the world. Not a lot that won't be said better and more elloquently by those that knew him personally. So I'll just give a few of my thoughts on the great Goon.
Spike was the main creative force behind the Goons. He didn't have the many faces of Peter Sellers or the infectious laughter of Harry Secombe, his greatest ability was to write a story and take it to its most illogical conclusion. I like to call it tangential humour, just when you think you know where his comedy is going Spike turns you around and takes you somewhere else. If your search for information on Spike has brought you here to my site for the first time you may like to have a look around all my Goon Show pages to get the feel of the what the Goons we all about.
Of all the Goons Spike was the one I felt the most affinity with. It's been said that Eccles was the real Spike ... I can't argue with that ... If you did a survey you would probably find that Eccles was the most popular/well known of the characters he played in the show but for me you can't beat Adolphus (Jim) Spriggs. I don't know why, he just appeals to me. Scroll down this page to find a few wav files of Jim.
I never met Spike but I am certainly much better for him being here. He's done me a power of good I tell you!
I'll leave you with the (slightly changed) words of Wal Greenslade at the the end of the final Goon Show in 1960 ...
"That's it, the last of them!"
