Trains
Melbourne has an extensive electric train service, serving inner, middle and outer suburbs. All lines radiate from the City Loop.
For a timetable, select your line from the list below. Use the suburb list if you don't know which line you're on.
Alamein (Alamein passengers transfer at Camberwell)
Stony Point (transfer at Frankston)
Williamstown/Werribee (Williamstown passengers transfer at Newport)
Service Levels
Service levels on most lines are as follows:
Weekdays: 15 or 20 min
Saturday: 20 min
Monday - Saturday evening: 30 min
Sunday morning: 30 min
Sunday afternoon: 20 min
Sunday evening: 30 or 40 min
Service frequency on outer portions of some lines is about half these figures. The main weekday timetable variations are more frequent services during peak periods and fewer services over Christmas - New Year.
Late-night services
The last train leaves the city around midnight on most lines. Extra services operate on Friday and Saturdays on most lines, with final departures around 1am.
After that travel is provided by hourly Nightrider buses early Saturday and Sunday mornings. These normally depart the city at 30 minutes past the hour and serve most suburbs with a railway station. A premium fare is payable and Metcards are not accepted.
Connections
Visit the Train Connections for details of bus and tram connections available at each station.
Stations
Stations are mostly one to two kilometres apart. Apart from the City Loop, most are above ground.
Major, or 'Premium', stations are staffed from first to last train so passengers can buy tickets, obtain travel advice and book V/Line services.
Smaller stations are normally unstaffed. However 'Station Hosts' are now present at some of these on weekday mornings to provide travel information, help passengers with the ticket machines and open station toilets.
Passenger Information
All stations have wall timetables that show times for a whole line. These are located at station or platform entrances. There is normally a ruled line to highlight times for your station. Large print wall timetables that only show times for your station and summaries of stopping patterns are sometimes also displayed. Note that display space at some of the smaller stations is limited, and timetables may occasionally be covered over by service change notices.
Automatic announcements advise of approaching trains. These are made up to two minutes before the train arrives. Manual announcements are also sometimes provided, especially if there have been short-term service alterations. At other times passengers can press the 'green button' to tell the time of the next train and how many minutes away it is.
Using the green button is a lot like making a phone call. Sometimes it may 'answer' immediately. Other times it takes several 'rings' to respond if the system becomes overloaded by too many buttons being pressed at once. If it rings out, press it again once the ringing stops; it is rare not to get an answer within three tries. At other times the green button will announce the time of but not the wait until the next train. The 'minutes to' function seems to require the train to have started its journey for it to work, so is not always available. Note that 'minutes to' announcements are estimates and it's not uncommon for late trains to make up time (although the converse can also happen).
Larger stations have visual 'next train' LED displays above each platform. These typically provide information on the train's due time, the destination, and 'minutes to'. Inner-city stations (plus Box Hill) also have monitor-type displays that give all this plus detailed information on train stopping patterns.
Some stations have digital clocks. Where these are not provided, look at the validators on each plaform; these always show the time when not validating a ticket.
Information on board trains comprises a combination of system maps, manual voice announcements, automated 'next station' announcements and LED visual displays. The last three are sometimes missing, unclear or incorrect, so it's a good idea to consult a timetable and system map before boarding.
City Loop
An underground railway loop runs beneath the centre of Melbourne. Trains travel in different directions through the Loop, depending on the time of day and day of the week.
On weekdays the direction reverses at approximately 12:45pm, while weekend services run in the same direction day and night. This baffles the occasional travellers and reference to timetables is recommended if arrival times are critical. Travel between some city stations can also be confusing as you may have to exit the loop and transfer to another train to complete your journey.
More information on getting around the Loop appears here.

Operators
Trains in Melbourne are run by Connex. V/Line Passenger trains serve some outlying areas. See the suburb index for details.
Coping with service disruptions
Service disruptions fall into either of two categories; planned or unplanned.
Planned service disruptions mostly occur due to track work and/or level crossing maintenance. To minimise disruption to commuters, the work is normally done on weekends, during which time trains are replaced by buses.
Passengers should allow extra time for their trip and read the 'Buses Replace Trains' notices at affected stations that are put up several days before. Advice is also provided through public address and 'green button' messages at stations on the day.
Buses depart from the 'Rail Substitute Bus' stops just outside the station. At some stations these stops are marked with blue signs. Staff are often provided to assist, especially at the ends of the section replaced by buses.
Replacement buses normally run at the same service frequency as the trains they replaced. Two or more may be provided, depending on patronage. Where a large section of line is closed, one bus may run express to reduce journey times. Follow the attendant's instructions and read the sign in the windscreen to avoid boarding the wrong bus.
Unplanned service disruptions are different for several reasons. Compared to planned disruptions, less notice can be given, replacement buses may not be available, automated announcements might be absent or incorrect and staff may not be present. The problem could be confined to a single station, or alternatively, affect a whole group of lines. There may also be no indication as to when normal service resumes; it could be as little as fifteen minutes or as much as two hours.
To save time, resourceful passengers develop their own 'Train Disruption Plan', for use when services stop. Most important is to exclude official rail substitute buses; for these to magically appear without several hours' notice requires a minor miracle, which no plan should assume. Instead it's wise to have your own 'rail substitute services', which are the regular tram and bus services near your station.
Suitable routes either (i) go direct to your destination, (ii) intersect with a bus or tram that does, or (iii) feeds into a railway station on an adjacent line (which may be unaffected). Ideally selected routes should be frequent (15-20 minutes is good for a bus) to reduce waiting time. The chance of getting a seat may be higher if the route is less well-known and/or departs from an unstaffed station.
If only part of your line is out of service, it could be wise to alight a few stations before the end. If you pick one with good regular bus services, you can use these instead of being one of hundreds at the terminus (who may not all fit on any replacement buses).
Most service interruptions are not serious enough to require use the abovementioned plan; it might only be useful twice a year. However having a plan puts you ahead of most other passengers and makes for faster and more reliable travel.
Trams
Trams provide convenient and frequent (though sometimes slow) travel through Melbourne's inner suburbs. Like the train system, most routes provide radial transport towards and away from the CBD. However, in the inner eastern and southern suburbs, cross-radial routes provide convenient travel to a wide range of destinations.
Click on the route number below for the timetable for your route. Use the suburb list if you don't know which line you're on.

Service levels
Approximate operating hours for most tram routes are as follows:
Monday to Thursday: 5am - midnight
Friday & Saturday: 5am - 1am (following day)
Sunday: 8am - midnight
Services are fairly consistent across the network except for routes 35 and 82, which finish earlier. Also route 79 replaces Route 78 on Sundays and evenings.
Service intervals on most routes are as follows:
Weekdays peak: 6-10 min
Weekdays off-peak: 8-12 min
Weekday evening: 20 min
Saturday: 12-15 min
Saturday evening: 20 min
Sunday morning: 30 min
Sunday daytime: 12-15 min
Sunday evening: 30 min
Late evening services do not always run their full route. Some routes run more frequently than the intervals mentioned above, with very frequent service along roads common to two or more routes. During peak periods the busy inner sections of some routes may be served by trams displaying route numbers not listed here.
Passenger Information
All tram stops have timetables that show the time of the next tram, vandals permitting. When services are frequent, exact times may be replaced by a frequency guide. Stops often also include maps or diagrams. These vary greatly in quality and information content, from a full route map to a straight line that does not show corners or relative distances. Stop signage is gradually being standardised as part of the Metlink project.
Some busy platform stops (mainly in the city) have electronic 'next tram' signs. In addition some have a large button that people can press for an audio announcement. These are similar to the 'green button' system at railway stations.
Real-time voice and SMS tram arrival information at stops without these facilities is available on your mobile phone through tramTRACKER. In both cases you dial a number (1300 698 726 voice, 1999 2772 sms) and enter a four digit tram stop ID number. Then it will tell you the time of the next three trams by voice or reply SMS message.
All trams have at least a tram network map inside. Older trams sometimes have a comprehensive inner city transport map, which should be used with caution due to its age. The Fares and Travel Guide and timetables are usually available in self-serve racks near the ticket vending machine, while advice of service changes is provided on a notice board at the front of the tram.
All good tram drivers manually announce major stops (including transfer points like railway stations), though as with trains this cannot be relied on. New trams include visual displays advising major stops and/or landmarks.

Buses
Buses generally serve suburbs distant from rail lines, act as feeders to railway stations, allow cross-suburban travel and provide late night transport on Friday and Saturday nights.
If you know the route number, select from the list below to view the timetable for your service. If you don't know the route, go to the suburb list and make your selection from there.
Buses generally operate between 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm Saturdays, though the State Government is currently extending many to operate until 9pm, seven days a week. Notes on running times (A, B, C, D) appear at the end of the list.

Variations
The more common route and timetable variations include: (1) Deviations, extensions and truncations on some routes at particular times. In particular, routes may be shortened during evenings and weekends. (2) Saturday services operating mornings only. (3) Extra services on Thursday, Friday or Saturday evenings for late night shoppers and party goers. (4) Weekday services running to a reduced summer timetable during the December/January period. For further information on service variations, see the News section, official timetables, or dial 13 16 38.
Service levels and connections
Most bus routes operate ever 20 to 60 minutes on weekdays and hourly on Saturdays. Operating hours are normally between 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm Saturdays, with many variations. However the government has recently announced extended hours, with most routes to operate seven days a week until 9pm. These improvements are being progressively introduced from September 2006.
Public holiday services vary greatly. Most services either do not operate or run to a Sunday timetable. However recently upgraded bus routes are using Saturday timetables on most public holidays to be in line with trains and trams.
To ensure services are scheduled for when you wish to travel, consult timetables beforehand as these are not always provided at bus stops. Allow extra time if your trip involves a transfer; services often do not connect and heavy traffic can hinder pedestrian access to stops.
Passenger Information
This is strictly a case of pot luck, so always assume that none will be provided. Bus stop signs may or may not include route number, destination and operating company. The presence of timetables cannot be taken for granted, with some operators being better than others. Stops may be served by two or more companies, with varying timetable policies. For many years signs and timetables were in a barrage of company styles, but uniformity is gradually being introduced through the Metlink project. Even where stops have been 'Metlinked', information may still be incomplete as timetables for some routes may be missing.
Drivers normally carry timetables, not just for a single route but also for others the company operates. Details of service changes are frequently announced on notices posted inside the bus (normally near the front).
