This section provides a full list of the Melbourne train, tram and bus routes that were operational in September 2002.
Old hyperlinks are preserved where available. While the old links are often dead, they are still worth preserving for those wishing to search further through the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.
Trains
Melbourne has an extensive electric
train service. All lines radiate from the central city. Apart from the
underground city loop, stations are above ground, and are spaced at one to two
kilometre intervals. Unlike tram services, which are largely confined to
the inner suburbs, Melbourne's rail network reaches out to distant suburbs.
Train services on most lines are as
follows: Weekdays: every 15 or 20 min. Saturday: 20 min. Sunday morning:
30 min. Sunday afternoon: 20 min. Evenings: 30 or 40 min.
Service frequency on outer portions of some lines is about half these
figures.
There are variations in the
direction that trains run through the City Loop on weekdays. The
direction changes at approximately 1:00pm weekdays. This is confusing to
occasional travellers and reference to timetables is recommended if arrival
time is critical.

Two companies operate urban
passenger trains in Melbourne. M> Train serves the
western and southern suburbs and Connex
Trains serve the northern and eastern suburbs. In addition, V/Line Passenger trains serve some
outlying areas – see the suburb index for
details. After midnight most suburbs near major railway lines are
served by hourly Nightrider
buses on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Trams
Trams provide convenient and
frequent (though somewhat slow) travel through Melbourne's inner suburbs.
Like the train system, most routes provide radial transport towards and away
from the CBD. However, in the inner eastern and southern suburbs,
cross-radial routes provide convenient travel to a wide range of destinations.
Service intervals on most routes
are as follows: Weekdays: 12 min. Weekday evening: 20 min. Saturday:
15 min. Saturday evening: 20 min. Sunday morning: 30 min.
Sunday afternoon: 15 min. Sunday evening: 30 min. Late evening
services do not always run their full route. Some routes run more
frequently than the intervals mentioned above, with very frequent service along
roads common to two or more routes.

Variations
The
more common route and timetable variations include: (1) Deviations,
extensions and truncations on some routes at particular times. In
particular, routes may be shortened on weekends. (2) Saturday
services operating mornings only. (3) Extra services on Friday evenings
for some routes serving major shopping centres. (4) Weekday
services running to a reduced summer timetable during the December/January
