'160 metres' is a narrow slice of radio spectrum just past 1600 kHz on your AM radio dial. Amateur radio operators transmit between 1800 and 1875 kHz. They can be heard on an easily modified AM radio. In Melbourne there is activity most days on 160 metres.

'160' is a fascinating band for the radio amateur and casual listener alike. Part way between the AM broadcast band and the HF amateur bands, 160 metres is an interesting blend of medium wave and HF practice in both equipment and antennas.

This website shows how you can make a $10 transistor radio receive 160 metres in about 10 minutes. It describes the activity on the band and gives some ideas on equipment and antennas if you're already an amateur operator. Finally, browse the links section to view some 160 metre stations, listen to some recordings and learn how you can become more involved in amateur radio.
