ACT II

TRACK 12
"Trommeln In Der Stadt"
("City Under Siege")

TRACK 13
"Ein Mann Wie Du"
("A Guy Like You")

TRACK 14
"Weil Du Liebst"
("Out Of Love")

Another song that had a part in the movie, but only as background score. A very effective opening to the second act, it is an ensemble piece that tells of how Paris has become a place of misery, with places burning and people being tortured. All because Judge Frollo wants to find Esmeralda.

Musically, not a lot has changed from the movie version. What has changed is the whole style of the song. It is no longer a blatant wacky kid-pleasing piece. The silliness has been adjusted to fit the story and music style of the rest of the show. There's also more cute little French terms throughout the song to accompany the very French piano accordian.

What Phoebus sings to Quasimodo to try and convince him to help in the search for Esmeralda. Charles, Antoine and Loni help in the convincing. In the end, Quasimodo accepts and the song continues as they begin to search. Hearing the two tenor voices harmonize at the end sends shivers up the spine.

TRACK 15
"Tanz Der Zigeuner"
("Dance of the Gypsies")

TRACK 16
"Weil Du Liebst - Reprise"
("Out Of Love - Reprise")

TRACK 17
"Wei Aus Stein"
("Made Of Stone")

This is the replacement for my least favourite song of the movie: "The Court of Miracles." Let's face it - the words and tune of that piece just didn't really fit. It was easily the most "kiddy" song of the film. Now we have an instrumental dance piece, based on the melody of "Balancing Act.

When Phoebus finally finds Esmeralda at the Court of Miracles, they confess their love to one another. Meanwhile, Quasimodo watches on and sings the short reprise of "Heaven's Light," just like in the movie.

Based on a short scene in the movie where the gargoyles tried to convince Quasimodo to break free and he snapped at them "Leave me alone." In this new scene, Quasimodo is a lot more biting and personal with his remarks. He attacks each of his gargoyles personally, and then they leave him alone to deal with his own problems. Has a very effective ending. This used to be my least favourite new song... until I heard the English lyrics. Although the tune is quite tricky and not especially catchy, the lyrics fit the tune magnificently, and it's a great one to sing along to!

TRACK 18
"Einmal"
("Someday")

TRACK 19
"Finale Ultimo"
("Grand Finale")

Originally written for Esmeralda to sing in the cathedral, this was replaced by "God Help The Outcasts" in the movie. Now it has been relocated to the show's ending, where it is sung by Esmeralda and Phoebus while they are imprisoned together. A very moving piece, heightened by the ensemble joining in near the end.

An eleven-minute piece that incorporates the entire ending, from Esmeralda being burned at the stake to the enormous reprise of "Bells of Notre Dame." Incorporates reprises of seven songs throughout. A very stirring, very sad and very powerful ending to a fantastic show!
