Henry Dobell, the grandfather of Philip Dobell was the first operate of the Cranbrook Union Mill. Many of the published histories will tell you that Mary Dobell was his widow. This is not true Mary was his mother and the first owner of the mill. Due to financial difficulties largely the result of Jesse Dobell, Mary's eldest son, she was forced to sell the mill in 1819.

My GGF Elisha followed his fathers trade and became a bootmaker. He lived and worked in Korumburra for many years and made surgical boots to order. He married Honor Dannock in 18 and they had four children; Ethel, Bill, Amy and Vi.
Elisha and Honor lived apart for the later part of their lives. Honor ran boarding houses for miners in Korumburra and Wonthaggi. Elisha died having his last pint of beer in the Korumburra Pub in 1926.
