What I bought

CaseSilverstone LC03V
I really liked this case from the first time I saw it. Good features and good size. I may need to do some ammature carpentry to fit it in the stereo unit though...
MotherboardGigabyte M55Plus-S3G
Well equipped known brand motherboard, on board everything including good quality video (NVIDIA 6100)
CPUAMD AM2 Dual core 3600+ low voltage
Came down to price / speed tradeoff. 3600 should be plenty. Low voltage should help with heat
CPU CoolerStock AMD
Supplier says this would be ok. I'm happy to try it for a while and see.
PSUAntec NEO HE 380
Seems to be an efficient, quiet supply. I like the idea of modular cables. Decided that with 300w I'd always be a bit worried about how hard I was pushing things. 380 gives me some overhead
 Antec TruePower 2.0 430
The NEO HE 380 didn't work with the gigabyte motherboard. The 430 was the next best thing the shop had. See the log page for more details. This one has some interesting features to run fans based on the PSU temperature.
TunerTechnisat AirSat 2
Seems simple with good linux support
TunerDVICO Fusion HDTV Hybrid
A bit more complex, does analog too, supposed to have good linux support. I went with 2 different cards to increase the chances of at least 1 working ;-)
KeyboardMicrosoft MCE keyboard/remote bundle
Seems to have linux support and the size etc seems good. Built in stick instead of a mouse.
Remote had good support but the keyboard didn't. Didn't mess around, just returned it. Using the remote from the DVICO card, no keyboard yet.
HDSamsung 250G SATA
 Supposed to be quiet...
DVDPioneer 111D
 I like pioneer drives !

This shopping list is still a work in progress, but it's starting to take shape.
Current idea is to buy all the core bits (CPU, MB, Memory, Case, Drives etc) and get the basic system up and running. During this process I can see how hot and noisy it all is, and then decide what cooling and quietening options I need to apply.
The plan is to identify as many of the bits I want, then print this page and take it off to the swapmeet and see if I can get better prices.

Looks like a 300W PSU may do the job which should make things a bit cheaper and cooler. Power Supply Calculator
