ABOUT WING MONG YEE
As you will have quickly realized by reading the essays on this site, I am not of Asian origin (although a tenuous link could be established if you subscribe to the theory as stated in the Encyclopedia Britannica that the ancestors of the American Indians were nomadic hunters of Asian Mongoloid stock who migrated chiefly over the Bering Strait land bridge into North America probably during the last glacial period, as my paternal grand-mother was an Amerindian of the Abenaki tribe… but I digress). Wing Mong Yee (Yong Meng Yu, in Mandarin) is obviously an adopted name. I chose it myself with the help of a Malaysian-Chinese friend (who incidentally doesn't care for Chinese movies). The name itself has to do with eternity, dreams and rain. The idea of getting a Chinese moniker came to me as I observed the trend for many Chinese people to adopt Westernized names. My first intention was to reflect my love for and fascination with Hong Kong films. Hopefully, my adoption of a Chinese name will be seen as gesture of friendship toward the beautiful people that the Chinese are.
On a more down to earth level, I am originally from the French part of Canada. I migrated to Australia in 1985, after having spent many months traveling in Europe and the Middle East. In the beginning of the nineties, I left the country for a one-year trip that took me from Southeast Asia to Mexico. During that year, I had the opportunity of spending some time in Hong Kong. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, even though I had not yet discovered Chinese cinema. I am looking forward to a next visit now that I have. I currently reside in an inner suburb of Melbourne; a city blessed with a large Asian presence.
To find more about me, I recommend you visit King Anarchy, a personal website featuring a collection of artworks, writings (some in French, some in English), and various other bits and pieces.
