Heres an interesting article from the Herald Sun about the Summernats of 1992, back when anything used to go.... drinking on the street... 20 people in the back of utes... burnouts everywhere on the main streets... a total out of control street party for 4 days including new years eve! There where just soooo many people on the streets that the Police were helpless to act....

FEDERAL police have moved to ban an annual national street machine meeting
in Canberra after three nights of rioting by thousands of drunken fans.
ACT police chief Peter Dawson said he would advise the ACT Government
to drop the controversial event because of "mob behaviour of the worst kind".
Mr Dawson said he was surprised there were no deaths when Canberra was
invaded by "the cream of our own and the nation's hooligans".
Three burning molotov cocktails and hundreds of bottles were hurled
at police at the height of the violence, which began on New Year's Eve and 
continued through to Saturday night.
The Summernats is the premier gathering of street car enthusiasts from
around the country and includes judging for the best-looking cars, drag racing
and wheel spinning.

From 1993 on the Summernats have been  totally cleaned up to what I remember it to be....
