Fire Fighting Services in Victoria
The Fire Services Museum focuses on fire fighting and services history in Victoria.

History - Country - CFA

The job of fire fighting for country families and settlers was extremely harsh and often heartbreaking.

Country towns had no mains water or electricity, most buildings were made of timber and Victorian summers were long and hot, hot, hot..

To meet the challenge of managing fire emergencies country residents rallied together and formed Volunteer Fire Brigades to help protect homes, businesses and to meet the ongoing threat of bushfires.

Each country region or town has an unique and colourful story to tell about the evolution of their own, local, Fire Brigade.

Each developed it's own volunteer team. Despite the economic hardship of the times, country residents managed to donate and construct appliances, equipment, buildings and other resources needed to meet each town's individual fire protection needs.

Country fire fighters, like their Metropolitan counterparts, proved to be inventive and resourceful, developing unique skills, methods and equipment modifications to meet the complex challenges of their region, and their time.

Fire Services Museum Victoria has an extensive collection of stories, photos and memorabilia of early country units throughout Victoria.

The Country Fire Authority has a great website offering extensive historical and other information. Click here to visit the Country Fire Authority website.
