Fire Fighting Services in Victoria
Prior to 1891 Victoria had a multitude of volunteer and Insurance company fire brigades.

In 1891 the Victorian Government passed a Brigades' Act which provided for the formation of two boards, one to cover rural Victoria and the other the Metropolitan area.

Thus the Country Fire Brigades Board and the Metropolitan Fire Brigades Board were born.

Imagine when there was no mains water, no motorised vehicles and no fire brigades. !! That's where the story begins.......

Imagine fighting a bush fire with water brought to the scene by buckets or horse and cart...!!!

In 1944, after the Black Friday fires, the Country Fire Authority was formed to replace the Country Fire Brigades Board.
