Located in the old head office of the Melbourne Fire Brigade, the award winning Fire Services Museum Victoria, was opened in 1979 to provide a home and focus for the history of fire fighting services in the Victoria. The Museum includes a collection of over 10,000 fire related items collected both nationally and internationally and including Country Fire Authority, and Metropolitan Fire Brigade, fire appliances, personnel histories, memorabilia and associated items.

Most of the Museum Personnel are retired fire fighters and can offer a lively story or two about their craft and it's history. The Museum is a not for profit organisation and all personnel are volunteers.

Fire Services MuseumLocation
The Fire Services Museum Victoria has two locations. The main Museum Display Area is conveniently located in 39 Gisborne Street, East Melbourne. The Restoration Workshops are located in Newport and are open to the public by appointment.

  • Australia's largest collection of fire brigade memorabilia including a year round display of vintage fire vehicles and other appliances, helmets, 18th century uniforms, badges, models, and much more

  • a shop with fire fighting memorabilia for young and old
  • venue and vehicle hire for parties, weddings and events
  • fire fighting demonstrations on several days throughout the year (bookings required)

The souvenir shop at the Fire Services Musem Victoria stocks a range of fire history related items for children and adults.

A range of mini fire trucks, fire safety CDs, fire hats, tee shirts and other items just for kids. Reproductions of the historical Insurance Marks, fire patches, traditional helmets and other history related items are available for bigger kids !!

Please note, the shop currently does not have EFTPOS or credit card facilities.

Fire Services MuseumRestoration Workshops
For fire fighting appliance enthusiasts, the Fire Vehicle and Appliance Restoration Workshops are located in Newport. The restoration team (all volunteers) at Newport welcome visitors by arrangement. All vehicles are restored to near as original as possible, bearing in mind that many "unique" modifications where made to vehicles and appliances in Fire Brigade workshops, by Firemen Engineers, as and when required. Volunteers and visitors are welcome. Phone the Museum for bookings (03) 9662 2907.

Fire Services MuseumGroup Visits
All kinds of clubs and organisations are welcome at the Fire Services Museum Victoria. The Museum, with it's combination of history and fire fighting appliances offers fun for young and old. The Museum is a fun filled adventure for kids and teachers can easily integrate the Museum outing into their teaching curriculum. Ask about Fire Safety Games CD available for purchase at the Museum souvenir shop.

Fire Services MuseumVenue and Vehicle Hire
Some Fire Museum Appliances are available for hire for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, promotional events, Santa runs, etc. Contact the Museum for availability and rates.

Fire Services Museum Membership
Become a member of the Museum and help us to restore and preserve the history of fire fighting services in Victoria. Museum members receive our Newsletter outlining the Museum's activities and many upcoming events. Membership is open to everyone. Contact the Museum to join.

Fire Services MuseumFamily History
The Museum has many photos and some early fire personnel records. Family history enquiries should be directed to the Curator (see details bottom of page), written requests preferred, by post, fax or email. A search fee of $22 inc. gst is requested to help cover costs.

Fire Services MuseumVolunteers Always Needed
We always need extra help. Many dedicated volunteers contribute time and talents to the Museum. New volunteers are always needed and welcomed. Opportunities for volunteering include working on appliances and equipment, organising displays, computer related work, marketing assistance, sorting, cataloguing and cleaning displays, etc.

As a not for profit organisation, the Fire Services Museum Victoria depends on donations to develop displays, upgrade facilities, maintain apparatus and promote various activities and events. Ask also about our "Adopt a Fire Truck" program.
