Gifted Education In Victoria
(Please wait for this page to fully load as it will make it much easier
to use)
Introduction
Welcome to my webpage. This page is intended to serve as a guide for parents
of intellectually gifted children living in Victoria, Australia, who are
seeking an appropriate education for their child.
Over recent years more and more schools have begun to see the provision
of education for gifted children as important and have set up programs
to help these children to learn and achieve their potential. This is a
great thing for gifted children but even though a wider range of programs
for the gifted now exist and many schools make provision for these children,
finding out about these programs has often been difficult.
It is the purpose of this page to, hopefully, make that task easier
for parents by providing them with a list of some schools who have stated
they make provision for gifted students. It will certainly not replace
proper research - the schools provisions must be examined in detail to
ensure they will be right for your child - but, it should, at least give
you a place to start looking.
It must be noted that the omission of a school from this list does not
mean that that school is not a good school for your gifted child, and it
certainly does not indicate that a school is not a good school. Many schools
may make special provision for gifted children and this simply is not known
to me - either because they do not make such information public knowledge,
or because it did not appear in my sources. Other schools may make no special
provision, but instead successfully educate and cater for gifted children
within their normal classroom programs.
Many schools omitted from this list stated in documents that I have
read that they seek to 'cater for individual differences' or that
they 'treat all children individually' or that they 'successfully
educate all children with special needs'. I considered very carefully
whether or not these schools should be included in the listing because
those statements can mean that gifted children are catered for at such
schools. In the end, I elected not to include such schools in the absence
of other information because my experience has shown me that such statements
can sometimes be inclusive of all children - except gifted children. I
make no judgement of whether or not this applies in the cases of these
schools - in many cases, perhaps all cases, such schools do not exclude
gifted children from their definitions. But I consider it to be the lesser
of two evils to risk excluding some schools that cater for gifted children
from this list if it avoids the risk of including a school in this list
that does not make provision for the gifted.
For the same reason, schools that say they provide 'enrichment'
for students have also been excluded in the absence of any other information.
This is because enrichment can have a great many meanings - it can include
provision for gifted children, it can also mean that a school provides
swimming lessons. Again, I make no judgement on whether or not such schools
do make provision for gifted children as part of their enrichment programs
- I simply do not know the answer and once again I have decided it is better
to risk the exclusion of a school from this list that does provide enrichment
for the gifted, than to risk including a school that does not and so risk
parents sending their child to a school that does not meet the needs of
their child based on the information on this page.
As a further clarification about the two paragraphs above, let me make
it clear that statements that a school 'cater to all needs' or 'have
enrichment programs' do not mean that a school will not appear in this
listing. Rather, such information simply does not comprise a reason for
a school's inclusion by itself. For example, if I have seen other information
that confirms a school's enrichment programs do include provisions for
gifted children, I will include that school in the listing but I must have
clear and unambiguous information.
If any Victorian schools not included in this list would like to provide
me with information on any provisions they make for the education of gifted
children, I will be happy to include an entry for that school. By the same
token, if any school that is included would like to provide me with more
information, I am happy to add that to this page. In these cases, please
e-mail me at drednort@alphalink.com.au
Finally, let me make clear that this page is for information purposes
only - it is not intended to replace detailed investigation of a school
by parents for their child, merely to provide them with some possible places
to start. Always remember that what is said and what is actually done can
differ, and even a good gifted program may not be appropriate for any individual
gifted child. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy with
regards to the information on this page, I accept no responsibility for
any inaccuracies that may have occurred (beyond a responsibility to correct
such inaccuracies if they are brought to my attention) and I accept no
responsibility for the use or misuse of the information on this page. Except
where prior Copyrights exist, this page is © 2001 Shaun Hately. Linking

any of the information contained here without obtaining permission from
me - such permission will virtually always be given.
Using the Page
In simple terms, the page is set out as an alphabetical listing of schools.
This is the easiest way to display the information and if you know the
name of the school you are interested in, you can simply scroll down the
list until you find it.
But many people do not know the name of a school they are interested
in and so I have provided a series of menus. These menus will list schools
by:
-
Geographic Location
-
Affiliation (ie, Government, Catholic, Independent, etc)
-
Grades or Years taught
These menus are located below and should be simple to use. Simply find
the menu you wish to use, and then click on the name of a school to be
taken to its entry in the alphabetical list.
The following information is provided for each school where I have been
able to find it.
-
Name of the School
-
Affiliation, Sex of Pupils, Grades and/or Years taught
-
Address
-
Phone Number
-
Fax Number
-
E-mail
-
Website
-
Description of their provision for gifted students
In many cases it may be convenient to contact schools by e-mail. For anyone
who does not have an e-mail address and wishes to communicate via e-mail,
www.hotmail.com
provides free web-based e-mail (there are numerous other similar services
- but this is a guide to schools not e-mail providers).
You will notice when you view the list of schools that it is quite colourful.
These colours exist for a reason and conform to the following key:
-
Text In Blue: Information typed in
blue was taken from the book 'Choosing a School for Your Child: Your
Complete Guide to Selecting the Right Secondary School Victoria: Issue #12
1999/2000' or 'Choosing a School for Your Child: Your
Complete Guide to Selecting the Right Secondary School Victoria: Issue #13
2000-2001'. This
book is published by Universal Magazines and can be purchased in book shops
and newsagents (RRP $7.60). It is well worth purchasing - it contains detailed
information for many schools. In cases where the material quoted appears in only
one issue of the book, this is indicated by an issue reference at the end of the
quoted text. The information on giftedness I have taken
from it represents only a very small part of its content. For further information
check out: http://www.schoolchoice.com.au/
-
Text in Navy Blue: Information typed in blue
was taken from the book 'The Age Good Schools Guide 2000' or 'The
Age Good Schools Guide 2001' by Dean
Ashenden and Sandra Milligan. This book is published by Hobsons Australia
Pty Ltd and can be purchased in book shops and newsagents (RRP $22.00).
This book is excellent - and I suggest its immediate purchase by anyone
looking for a school for their child - it contains information on every
secondary school in Victoria - often quite a lot of information. In cases where
the material quoted appears in only one edition of the Guide, this is indicated
by an edition reference at the end of the quoted text. The information
on giftedness I have taken from it represents only a very small part of
its content. For further information on this book check out: http://www.thegoodguides.com.au/schools
-
Text in Teal: Information typed in blue was
taken from the book 'The Right School for Your Child?' 1999-2000.
This book is published by New Hobsons Press on behalf of the Association
of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia.
-
Text in Green: Information in green was taken
from the webpage of the school concerned (sometimes slightly edited by
me to remove erroneous information, or information I am not comfortable
having on this site - the names of children etc). In nearly all cases,
a link to the site this information was obtained from is given immediately
after the extract and more information may be available at that site. Please
note that webpages do change over time, so information I list on this page may
no longer appear on a schools own page.
-
Text in Purple: This indicates information
that comes from the school directly - perhaps in a Prospectus, or in Enrolment
information, or perhaps by direct contact from those associated with the
school.
-
Text in Olive: Occasionally information
may be printed in olive - this indicates that it was taken from a website
that is difficult to link to for technical reasons - often because it was
returned by a search from an online database.
-
Text in Red: This indicates missing information
- in some cases, for example, I have the names of schools but not their
addresses. I am working to gather this missing information - and naturally
if you can help me, please e-mail me at: drednort@alphalink.com.au
As this page develops, other colours may come to be used to represent other
sources of information, etc. A key will be included if that is the case.
Navigation Menus
The following menus are simple to use. Simply choose which menu you wish
to use, and when you have identified a school you would like to obtain
information on, click with the mouse on its name and you will be taken
to the appropriate entry. These menus are still under construction following
the recent update to this site.
Schools by Geographic Location
In constructing this menu, I have decided to list schools by the name of
the municipality (local council area) they fall in, rather than by suburbs.
The reason for this choice is simple - there are too many suburbs to make
a search based on that criteria useful.
Bear in mind that, in most cases, people will not wish to know only
about schools in their own suburbs, but will also be interested in those
in neighbouring suburbs - ones that are close enough for easy travel. By
grouping schools by municipality rather than suburb, it is easier to search
your area rather than merely your own suburb. In addition, if you choose
to widen your search area further, you merely have to select only a few
neighbouring municipalities - as opposed to potentially a dozen or more
suburbs.
Rural schools are currently handled differently - they are in a separate
rural menu at the end of the list that does not seek to classify them any
further geographically. This has been done for two reasons:
-
There are relatively few rural schools
-
I have not yet been able to find reliable information on which to base
a rural geographical division. If someone can suggest a convenient method
of doing so please email me.
The same applies if you can suggest a potentially better way of listing
suburban schools - just because listing by municipality is the best method
I can personally find, doesn't mean there isn't a better one.

Schools by Affiliation
Affiliation, in this case, can mean one of two things. The first is whether
or not the school is a state school run by the Victoria Department of Education.
These schools will be classified in one menu.
If the school is a private school (not government run) it will be classified
by its religious affiliation (including a category of non-denominational).
Bear in mind that some schools affiliated with a particular religion do
accept students from other faiths.

Grade or Year Level Taught
In compiling these menus, I have decided to have only three categories:
Primary, Secondary, and Prep to Year 12
-
Primary will include all schools that teach at least some grades from Prep
to Grade 6 - this will include normal primary schools, Prep to Year 12
schools, and a few schools which straddle the Primary and Secondary Grades.
-
Secondary will include all schools that teach at least some Years from
Year 7 to Year 12 - this will include normal secondary schools, Prep to
Year 12 Schools, and a few schools which straddle the Primary and Secondary
Grades.
-
Prep to Year 12 schools will include only those schools which teach at
least all classes from Prep to Year 10 - virtually all of these also teach
Years 11 and 12, but there are a few exceptions.
It should be realised that some schools also offer classes at a Pre-Prep
level, or offer Kindergarten classes. These schools are indicated in the
alphabetical listing, but logistics make it impractical to include them
in this menu system. For reference, the most common schools to do this
are the Prep to Year 12 schools.
While the menu system as described above will not provide full details
on which years a school teaches, that information is provided in the main
alphabetical listing.

gifts of every student in its care. Gardner's Multiple Intelligences and
Blooms' Taxonomy are followed at primary and lower secondary level to enable
the development of individualised programs in classroom settings. In addition,
the Special Education Program has been developed to address the needs of
those students who exhibit intellectual potential . . .
The Special Education Program includes the
application of Diagnostic Educational Assessments from which recommendations
and programs are developed for the use of the classroom teacher; withdrawal
of specific students from the classroom for direct instruction in individualised
and/or group learning settings in skills, knowledge and attitudes and liaising
with organisations outside the school which foster the well being of students
with gifts and talents, their teachers and their parents - for example,
Children with Higher Intellectual Potential Programs (CHIP) and the Victorian
Association for Gifted and Talented Children.
Acceleration in Years 7 to 12 is also available
to ensure a challenging curriculum. Selection for acceleration is confirmed
after consultation between academic staff, Heads of House, Assistant Heads
of House and parents. Students are encouraged to begin some VCE units in
Year 10 and complete Units 3/4 in at least one subject in Year 11. In conjunction
with various tertiary institutions some students can study one or more
university subjects during Year 12."

"Lyndale Secondary College is a traditional,
co-educational school with a commitment to academic excellence. The Accelerated
Learning Program was developed to better address the needs of students
who demonstrate above average abilities, high levels of task commitment
and creativity. This program has become an integral element in the school's
culture and community.
Acceleration permits students to commence a
unit of work earlier, or to move through a program more quickly than others
according to their academic capacities. Students reach higher levels of
thought processes and performance and, in doing so, they benefit intellectually,
socially and emotionally from the faster pace and the challenge involved.
Integrating enrichment and acceleration allows abstract and complex concepts
be taught and students proceed at a more rapid pace than that of the average
learner.
The Lyndale Secondary College Accelerated Learning
Program aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop investigative,
problem solving, analytical and creative thinking skills which will challenge
and engage them in a very active style of learning.
Each May a comprehensive assessment procedure
is used to select 26 gifted and talented Year 6 students to join the Program
in the following year. Aptitude tests are used and information is sought
from the applicants' classroom teachers and parents.
Students in the Program are fully immersed
in the life of the college. They may be found together with other Lyndale
Secondary College students - playing in the college band, editing the college
newsletter or magazine, acting in college plays or on the sporting field.
Participants' families represent a cross section
of socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Parents are strongly
supportive of the program, reporting great satisfaction in their children's
intellectual and social development.
Students enter the program in Year 7. Their
curriculum in the first 3 years is accelerated across those key learning
areas where higher cognitive skills allow rapid advancement. Approximately
half the week's classwork is undertaken in age peer (non-accelerated) studies
which include, Technology, Personal Development, Studies of Society and
the Environment, Arts, Languages and Sport. English, Mathematics and Science
are accelerated subjects.
Although accelerated the Lyndale Secondary
College program is fully sequential with no grade skipping. It is comprehensive
providing acceleration across a range of subjects. It provides each participant
with a supportive peer group environment rather than offering acceleration
through withdrawal from the classroom.
As well as being accelerated, the curriculum
is enriched by the inclusion of additional material. Students take extra
VCE subjects, completing units even before they fully join the Year 11
VCE stream. The Accelerated Learning Program is intended to provide maximum
flexibility in the senior school by allowing additional academic credits
to be achieved through TAFE certification, first year university subjects
and/or providing opportunities for students to increase the range and depth
of their VCE studies. In those cases students' Tertiary Entrance Ranks
(TER) should be enhanced by bonus points to provide opportunities for higher
level acceptance to tertiary studies.
Participating students benefit from working
with children of similar ability, who have all been accelerated. They develop
into well organised and happy young adults.
Academically, the Accelerated Learning Program
gives these children something more valuable than knowledge alone - it
gives them an enthusiasm for learning. (http://www.lyndale.vic.edu.au/accelerated.htm)

"At MGC, we are all well aware of the now
generally accepted theories of multiple intelligences, and of the need
to provide curriculum which embraces the educational needs of all
of our students. We are particularly aware of the need to challenge students
with exceptional abilities.
Each year, we are also building both on the
number and the diversity of programs, which cater specifically for those
students who are gifted or talented.
The Leadership Program at MGC does, of course,
offer exceptional opportunities for many, many students to develop their
skills in leadership.
From the very first year of the college’s short
life, our extra-curricula arts programs have provided opportunities and
challenges for those students particularly gifted in this area. And this
is a program which we have seen building in strength and growing every
year. Again, since our first year, we have had students participating in
the Australian Mathematics Competition.
This year, we have also had students involved
in a number of projects specifically developed to cater for Gifted students,
namely Tournament of Minds and the International Student Project.
Tournament of Minds is based upon the
Odyssey
of Minds, which began in the USA. The purpose of Tournament of Minds
is to give students the opportunity to participate in creative activities,
encouraging and challenging problems, which demand experimentation and
which reward divergent thinking. The students involved receive Long
Term Problem six weeks prior to Tournament Day from one of three categories:
Language and Literature, Mathematics and Engineering or the Social Sciences.
On Tournament Day, the students also receive a Spontaneous Problem
which could involve them in any of the following: brainstorming type problems,
drawing, costume creation, dramatisation or creative writing or be of a
‘hands on’ nature." (http://www.mgc.vic.edu.au/upstream98/gifted_programs.htm)

"The Discovery Program is a program begun
in Israel which aims to enrich the education of highly able children everywhere.
It is a 3 year course which begins with a small group of students in Year
7 and follows them through until the end of Year 9.
The goals of the Discovery Program are:
-
to seek out and upgrade the education of junior
secondary students who have potential for giftedness and leadership,
-
to sharpen communication skills and work habit
necessary for maximising scholarly productivity
-
to encourage problem solving, brainstorming, and
evaluation of learning.
How Does It Work? During Term One, Year
7 students are chosen based on the recommendation of their teachers in
Year 7 and Primary School, using such criteria as creativity, independent
thought, persistence, enthusiasm for learning and leadership. These students,
along with their parents, are invited to attend a meeting. The purpose
of the meeting is to explain the concept of the Discovery Program and its
goals.
The actual program for year 7s commences in
Term Two, with year 8 and 9 students commencing the second week of term

"The School's Gifted Students' Programme,
which commenced in 1981, is the longest running and most stable such programme
in Australia. It has become an integral element of the School's culture
and community.
Each April, aptitude tests and interviews are
used to select 26 gifted Year 6 children to join the Programme in the following
year. The tests include an intelligence test, creative and argumentative
essays, and a test of scholastic aptitude. Interviews are conducted with
short-listed applicants and their parents, and information is sought from
the applicants' classroom teachers
Students in the Programme join fully in the
life of the School. They may be found - together with other UHS students
- playing in the School concert, editing the School newspaper or acting
in the School play. UHS offers a rich music programme, and is also noted
for its strength in English, Mathematics, Sciences, and Languages. Languages
taught are French, German, Indonesian and Latin.
Participants' families represent a cross-section
of socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Parents are strongly
supportive of the Programme, reporting great pleasure at their children's
intellectual and social development.
Participants in the Programme advance successfully
to tertiary education - many taking up multi-disciplinary courses, or degrees
with double majors. Their relative youth is generally no impediment to
university entrance, although some choose to defer enrolment while they
travel and study overseas.
Students enter the Programme in Year 7, and
after three years join the VCE sub-school, thus completing their secondary
education in only five years.
Their curriculum is accelerated across those
Key Learning Areas where their higher cognitive skills allow rapid advancement:
English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Studies of Society and the Environment,
and Languages. In the subjects Music, Physical Education, Art and Sport,
students take classes at a level appropriate to their individual abilities
and physical development.
Although accelerated, the UHS programme is
fully sequential - with no "grade skipping". It is comprehensive, providing
acceleration across a broad spectrum of subjects. It is cohort-based, providing
each participant with a supportive peer-group environment, rather than
offering acceleration though "withdrawal" from the classroom.
As well as being accelerated, the curriculum
is enriched by the inclusion of additional material and special subjects.
Students take extra VCE subjects, completing units even before they join
the VCE stream in Year 11. They have a very wide choice: in a typical year,
UHS offers some 130 units in 39 different VCE subjects.
Participants in the Gifted Students' Programe
invariably achieve excellent VCE results, and are admitted to a tertiary
course of their preference - along with other students of UHS. The accelerated
group which graduated in 1997 included two entries into Medicine (including
one with the perfect TER score of 99.95), three into Arts/Law, and several
into Commerce, Mechatronics/Engineering, and Music.
Students in the Programme may also participate
in the University of Melbourne's Programme for High Achieving Students
(MUPHAS), under which they take first year degree subjects while still
studying for their VCE." (http://www.unihigh.vic.edu.au/gifted/index.html)

"Wilson Park Secondary College has implemented
a new and exciting program called the 'Advance Program'. Wilson Park is
the first secondary school in the Melton district to offer an 'Advance
Program" for highly able learners.
What is the 'Advance Program'? The 'Advance
Program' is a program currently operating in years 7 to 9 that offers a
comprehensive and challenging curriculum for highly able learners. This
unique program extends and broadens students' skills: It motivates them
and teaches them to take pride in their learning and to succeed in their
schooling, so that they are able to reach their full learning potential.
Why are we doing it? A main problem
in education in Australia and other western countries is student underachievement.
We are not talking about any particular groups, but the majority of students
that attend secondary school. Many students seem to have an attitude, whether
they are deemed to be slow, average or bright, that says, "I'll complete
the task required with minimal effort and intellectual input". As teachers
and parents we must move away from this mediocre approach to education
which accepts from many of our students minimum work, time spent on study
and intellectual input.
Aims of the 'Advance Program'. The program
aims in the first instance to raise the educational expectations that teachers
and parents have of students. If teachers and parents are united in the
expectation of 'more' from our students, then the aim is to engender in
students an attitude that gives them pride and confidence in their achievements
at school and says to them, 'you can do this, and with a little more thought
you can do better than this'.
Implementation of the 'Advance Program'.
We
are starting with the following initiatives:
-
The formation of accelerated learning groups in
years 7-9 of students who according to test results are capable of high
academic performance.
-
The accelerated groups are to be used as role
models for all students to raise their performance levels and for teachers
to develop improved teaching methods and more challenging curriculum. Teachers
will be provided with substantial professional development resources to
develop curriculum that promotes the higher levels of learning.
-
Regular evaluation of student performance based
on classroom assessments and testing. Teaching programs and curriculum
will be regularly evaluated in the light of student performance." (http://www.peg.apc.org/~wilsonparksc/Advance.html)
