When a measured parameter has a value which lies between two LED positions, those two LEDs light with an intensity proportional to the closeness of the parameter value to the LED position. You can interpolate based on the relative brightness, and read the speed typically to within a km/hour or so and the direction to within a few degrees.
Rev 5 and later FW: If the wind speed is off scale, the speed display autoranges to 2X scale and the speed dial LEDs flash. Thus, if the speed LEDs are flashing, the wind speed is twice that indicated by the speed dial scale.
To display the maximum gust, press and release the Max Gust pushbutton. The maximum wind speed and direction are displayed for about five seconds.
The anemometer logs the wind speed distribution and wind direction distribution. This data is stored in non-volatile memory in the anemometer itself and is not lost if the unit is depowered. The logged distributions can be read at any convenient time by connecting a computer to the anemometer serial port and using the Windows software we supply. The power which would have been generated by a wind turbine can then be calculated.
To reset the maximum gust and logged speed and direction distribution data, hold down the Max Gust pushbutton for more than five seconds, until the displays drop back to read zero.
