7. Downloading speed and direction distributions


On completing logging, depower the RV229 when the LED is on and steady, not while it is off or flashing. This avoids the risk of interrupting a write to the log's flash memory, which could corrupt the data therein.

Unplug the RV229 from the DE9/DB9 plug used to connect to it while logging.

Disconnect the transducer from the RV229.


The LED should remain unlit for all the remaining operations described in this section.

Plug the RV229 into the computer's RS232 serial port.

Start Hyperterminal, which is usually found under Programs, Accessories, Communications.

In the Connection Description window enter a name for the new connection. rv229 may be suitable.

In the Connect To window select the comm port to which the RV229 is connected.

In the COMx Properties window, Port Settings tab, select 9600 bits per second, 8 data bits, no parity, no flow control.

Select Transfer, Capture Text and enter a file name. Later you will be able to open the file directly with Excel if you name it with a .csv extension.

To download the file, type
dl
You should see the d and the l displayed on the screen as you type

then press <Enter>.

You should see the speed and direction distribution log file scroll rapidly up the screen.

Select Transfer, Capture Text, Stop.


Start Excel, or the software you intend using to analyse the distribution data, and open the captured distribution log file.
After having confirmed that the distribution log file has been saved and is accessible, you can clear the RV229's log.
In Hyperterminal;

To clear the RV229's log, type
cl
You should see the c and the l displayed on the screen as you type,

then press <Enter>.

You should see the speed and direction distribution log file scroll rapidly up the screen as before, but with all counts set to zero.
