Peta took an A3 size photocopy from "The Times Atlas of the World", showing the territory we were to explore. On the back of that copy she drew her own map, with observations she made as we went. That meant that her map is back-to-front, east to the left, west to the right. The general direction of our trajectory is therefore from right to left, though it begins from Chengdu in the other direction. Peta's map is one of Tony's most treasured possessions.
The map is shown here in three overlapping sections.

EAST SECTIONThe next map, the coloured one, is too big to appear on your screen all at once. Scroll down to see Chengdu where we began after flying in from Guangzhou; we headed west to Kangding and beyond before returning to Chengdu. Then scroll to the right for Xi'an, which we reached by overnight train from Chengdu. Then we did a great loop by bus, north to Yulin, west to Yinchuan, back to Xi'an and then eastward to Zhengzhou and Kaifeng. Then we returned from Zhengzhou to Chengdu by train and caught the bus to Qingcheng Shan, a mountain north-west of Chengdu before returning to Chengdu and our flight home via Guangzhou.
On the map, BIG YELLOW DOTS are places where we spent one or more nights; SMALL YELLOW DOTS are some other places we visited.
