 The Press Family in Australia-

*The second wife of James Press (1795-1864), Ann Press ( nee Crocker, nee Lovern) emigrated to Australia at 67 years of age in 1873.

The unassisted shipping records show- PRESS, MRS age 67,  arrived Melbourne DEC 1873, on the 'GREAT BRITAIN'.   (fiche 323 page 001).

Kate noted  - 'This is the redoubtable Mrs. Ann Press. According to Ron Press's brother Harry Press, she apparently trusted no one and before undertaking the voyage to Australia sewed all her money (sovereigns) into the hem of her petticoat. The family were worried that if the ship went down the weight of the money would take her to the bottom of the sea. The other Ann Press (nee Lovern), the daughter of  this Ann Press and her first husband  married Alfred P Press (1834 - 1874) the brother of Edwin Press and they emigrated to Australia in 1858, where Alfred later owned the Yorkshire Hotel in Melbourne. After Alfred died in 1874, Ann Press married  Francis Church in 1878.  They are all buried at Melbourne General Cemetery.

Headstone Inscription-

Family Differences?

It is interesting to note that there are  two Press family 'camps', one with a strong temperance leaning, the other owning Hotels. The second wife of Captain Henry Press, Margaret Knowles Press (nee Patterson), was president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in Melbourne for ten years, being made Honorary Life President in 1923, while the uncle of Captain Henry Press, Alfred P Press, who  emigrated to Australia in 1858, owned the Yorkshire Hotel in Melbourne.
