Circa 1910 William Burke was a policeman. In circa 1910 William Burke was living at at Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. He emigrated circa 1910 travelling on the (ship unknown). Research Notes: Baptism sponsors: Patrick Bourke and Maria Bourke William Burke, born 31.st January, 1880 at Erinagh, emigrated to America in the early 1900s and settled in Elizabeth, New Jersey, a company town for the Standard Oil Company (better known as Mobil Oil but now owned by Esso) which attracted many Irish emigrants. William secured employment with the Standard Oil Co. but later joined the police force. Descendants of William live in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Recent correspondence with Linda Burke, a granddaughter of William, disclosed that William married Norah Boyle, a County Mayo native, and they had four children. Below is a clipping from a local newspaper sent home to Ireland which relates one episode in his life. William Burke: Hero of Gun Chase Elizabeth Evening Times, Monday, 17th November, 1919 "Facing guns of four desperados, two of whom, during the early hours of yesterday morning, were found prowling about the entrance to the Union County Bank, in Broad Street. Policeman, William Burke, after a running fight in which at least twenty shots were fired at him, succeeded in capturing one of the men who is now at the General hospital with a bullet wound in the right breast. While on duty Patrolman Burke apprehended four men outside the Union County Bank. He ordered them from their machine and shooting broke out. When the shooting affray between policeman Burke and the quartet started, the fact that the automobile was between the officer and the men is declared to have been all that saved his life. Three bullet marks in the rear left side of the car give mute evidence that if the gunman's arm had been an inch or two to the left, policeman Burke would have been hit. One bullet was also found in the tire shoe fastened to the rear of the machine. The police have recovered a seven passenger Buick, a .38 caliber revolver with one loaded bullet, various tools including a brace and bit, a chisel, hacksaw, screw driver, steel drill and a jemmy. Chief Mulcahy praised officer Burke for the coolness displayed by him while under fire. ‘Burke followed instructions thoroughly, the Chief said. ‘I have told all of the men to use every precaution in dealing with suspects and to be particularly careful in handling automobile cases'." |
