Research Notes: Issue: 12 children, Joseph, Brigid, Christine, Kenneth, Mary Ellen, Mathew, Alice Daniel, Luke, Pauline, Austin and Martha Ann. The sale of the residence of Kenneth Vaughan: "the best and the biggest beach house residence Melbourne can offer "Shanagolden", 12 Moule Avenue, Brighton. Brick, 15 rooms, land about 3903 square metres, features tennis courts and a boat shed. Auction 3pm Wednesday 16 April 1997 by J.R. Dixon 5967411 When a luxurious property on Brighton's beach-front rewrote the suburb's record books in November, with a top price of $3.65 million, there was much speculation among analysts and locals about which house would knock it off the perch. "Shanagolden", at 12 Moule Avenue, a couple of doors along the coveted sandy strip, now looks certain to take that honour. The contemporary mansion, with cinematic bay views over the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, has an estimated price range of between $4 and $6. According to selling agent Jonathan Dixon, the owners have already rejected a $4 million offer. The latest big, beige-rendered Brighton house to entice the rich is well-known to foreshore joggers and strollers, even though its main entrance is hidden away off Moule Avenue and secluded at the end of a 100-metre lane way. It is one of only 48 properties abutting the seashore and one of 15 houses which actually front the beach. With a width of almost 46 metres, "Shanagolden's" block has the most generous beach frontage of all. Among its other claims to fame is a rambling grassy allotment of almost 0.4 of a hectare, making it one of Brighton's three largest remaining holdings. Rather than offering, a swish lifestyle package, or a larger-than-life mansion with flashy mod cons, this, is a colossal family house with homely, 1970s-style features at every turn. The 15-room residence was built 25 years ago pp a, rise above the 'beach by Ken Vaughan of the well-known commercial construction company bearing his surname. The Vaughans were no strangers to creating massive memorable buildings, Mr. Vaughan's father, David Ernest Vaughan, built the ANZAC Shrine of Remembrance The residence had to be large for another reason - the Vaughans raised twelve children in its lofty rooms. The property's rambling grounds have a magnificent backdrop offering a 180 degree outlook of Port Phillip Bay. The rustic grounds also contain what must e Brighton's most expensive chook-house, which takes pride of place on the southern boundary. It comes complete with several contented-looking hens obviously enjoying the million-dollar views. The beach-side tennis court once accommodated 400 guests but with its gate leading directly to the beach the party the party could have been greater. An adjacent boat shed also opens to the sand The house has a timeless design with a distinctive nautical flavor reflecting Ken Vaughan's love of sailing. In its heyday, it has nine bedrooms. Today, the layout has been slightly modified to include modern kitchens on both floors but retains its grand formal rooms, billiard room, study and bathrooms. The selling agency believes a buyer may spend -as much as $1 million revamping the interior to 90s standards. Or a purchaser may use it as a new home site, with the best view in Melbourne — subject to Council approval, of course.1 |

Research Notes: A research query from Julie Whyte is included Julie Whyte is researching Dennis Eagan/Egan who married Ellen King c1820. They had 3 known children: Ellen, James and Hanoria, all born and registered in Moyne Tipperary between 1821 and 1831 . James married Margaret Liston, niece of Julia Healey who married James Egan [see my database]. Julia Healy was Margaret Liston's baptism sponsor and a sister to Margaret's mother, Bridget Healey, who married John Lysten (Liston, Lyster). Julia and Bridget's father was Thomas Healy who lived on an allotment in the townland of Derryfadda in Parish of Moyne along with the Eagan's, the Listons, the Dwyers and the Mahers in about 1843. James who married Margaret is believed to have come to Australia after mid 1858 (that's when they married) on the British Trident. Geelong hospital records show their eldest son Dennis' place of birth as British Trident. Julie JulieMWhyte@aol.com [14 March 2003]. |
