Adeline Clara Catherine Dowling was born 2nd July, 1905 and was baptized on the 24th July, 19 05. The entry in the birth index shows only "Clarance" but it is believed this relates to Adeline who was baptized as Clara Catherine. Her Sponsors at the baptism were Katie's brother and sister, John [known as Patrick] Burke and Gertrude Sarah Burke. She was employed later in life as a postmistress and also as head waitress in the London Tavern, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. She remained unmarried and died on 7th August, 1978. She proved most elusive to the author because of her preference for the name she used in official records, hence the difficulty in tracing her movements. She died in the Alfred Hospital and was previously living at 46/150 Inkerman Street, St Kilda from 1969 to 1978. She was buried in the New Cheltenham Cemetery, R.C. section, compartment 9A, grave number 34. The headstone gives her name as Adeline Mary Dowling. It was only in death that she was able to be racked down by the author. Much to his dismay, in October, 1978, he was informed that Adeline had been compiling a family tree for years and had kept in touch with relatives in Ireland, but unfortunately the people looking after her estate had burnt all the old letters and photos etc. Thinking them of little use!! The death notice in the paper read:- On the 7th August, 1978 at the Alfred Hospital, Adeline Clare (Veronica), daughter of the late Richard Dowling and Catherine Mary Dowling, loved sister of Richard Patrick, Eileen, Michael (dec) and Phyllis. Requiem mass for the repose of soul of Miss Adeline Veronica Dowling will be held at St Mary's Church Dandenong Road, East St Kilda.2 |
