She emigrated in 1898 travelling on the Ormuz. She witnessed the marriage of John Shine and Jane (Maria) Hanrahan on 5 May 1900 at Basilica of St Patrick, Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia; (marr wit: Ellen Hanrahan).4 Research Notes: The following are some notes Terry Shine made about the descendants of Ellen Callaghan (nee Hanrahan), who is the sister of his grandmother Jane Shine (nee Hanrahan), but only going down to those descendants that are known personally to him and to those that he thinks would be of interest to members of the Shine family tree in Western Australia. If anyone wants to pursue the Hanrahan family and their descendants, they should visit Padraig Kenny's website at www.hanrahanfamilytree.com I do not know a lot about Ellen Callaghan (nee Hanrahan). The following is what I have found out about her and her descendants from some relatives notes but mostly from Anne Battista, one of her granddaughters and from what Padraig Kenny has on his website. Ellen Hanrahan, (known as Ellie) born in 1877 in Kilbaha, Morvayne, in Co. Kerry, daughter of Michael Hanrahan and Margaret Cunningham (source: I have worked this out from her age at death recorded on her death certificate). She emigrated to Melbourne, Australia sometime in the late 1890's and lived with her sister Jane who had either come out with her at the same time or Jane may have already come out on an earlier voyage. It was while they were in Melbourne that John Shine, who had travelled to the goldfields at Boulder in West. Australia in 1898, returned and met Jane and Ellen (there is some conjecture that John and Jane may have known each other when they had lived in Ireland). I believe that John probably proposed to Jane and asked her to go back to WA \with him where they would be married. Jane would not go without her younger sister Ellen and so John took both of them to WA late in 1899 or early 1900 and John and Jane were married in Fremantle on 6th May 1900. The three of them then went to Boulder to live where John had a thriving business of supplying fresh vegetables and water to the miners while his wife Jane and her sister Ellen ran a boarding house and cooked hot meals for the appreciative miners. I do not know where Ellen met her future husband Owen O'Callaghan. I have seen some notes that say it was in Melbourne, but going on what Anne Battista has told me, I think it was probably at Boulder where Owen was trying his hand at mining for gold. Owen O'Callaghan was born in 1878? in Co. Clare and came out to Australia in ? The descendants of his family now go by the surname of "Callaghan". Anne Battista told me that she had heard that there were so many Irish people on the goldfields with surnames that started with an "O" that the Government bureaucrats of the day decided to drop the "O" from the Irish names when they were registering for mining licences, birth certificates, marriage certificates etcetera and a lot of the Irish descendants in Australia now do not have the "O" in front of their surname. Owen and Ellen were married on 14th June 1902 in Boulder. It is interesting to note that their surname is spelt "Callaghan" on their marriage certificate and "O'Callaghan" on their burial records and gravestone. From what I have heard from stories amongst relatives, Jane and Ellen must have been very close and their husbands John Shine and Owen O'Callaghan were very good friends. John and Jane moved to Roelands to take up an allocated 300 acre block of land shortly after the wedding of Owen and Ellen. Anne Battista remembers that her grandfather Owen was a grocer in Boulder and it is my feeling that he probably took over John Shine's business when John went to Roelands.3 |

Research Notes: According to Hanrahan relatives in Ireland (2001) four Hanrahan children emigrated to Australia, Jane, Ellie, Johanna and James (Jim). Jim supposedly died on the voyage. The following is a note from Padraig Kenny: At home I found an old scrap of paper in an envelope at the back of a drawer which looked like a family tree. I put it away because none of the names were familiar to me. After a few months as I learnt more I realized it was the Hanrahan family tree. On it John, Michael, William, Jim, Ellie, Johanna, and Jane, all listed as the children of Michael. This leads me to believe that Patrick and one of the girls listed above died young. Amazingly it also lists all Michael's brothers and their children. It doesn't say who they married which could make the job of tracing them very hard. Padraig Kenny, Ireland Michael's brothers would have been born c1830-40 and their children would have been born 1860-80. Denis Issue: Michael; John; Jane (Mrs Johnson Ballybunion). James (Jim) Issue: John; Denis; Michael (sapper WW1 emigrated Australia); Kate A?. Patrick Issue: John P; Patrick (Paddy emigrated USA and had issue: Timothy and Michael c191PE0 and Michael had issue: John c1940 Cornelius or Corney had issue: Daniel Margaret and Kate. I checked the Registry Office but the only birth I found was for Michael (5 April 1874) and Catherine (19 March 1868). I think that the Maria listed in the Church baptism entries (5th Feb 1872) is actually Jane Hanrahan. There were a couple of entries for Mary Jane elsewhere in the family tree so I presume Maria was known as Jane.1 |

John Shine married Anne Butler in 1868.
John Shine died in 1925, at Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia.1
Research Notes: In the Weekly Times 2 July 1932 there is a photo of H Shine in the Bacchus Marsh football team. Research Notes: In my e-mail (under Shine misc files) there is a reference to James Shine (Co Cork) and Hanorah Collins who were living in West Melbourne. I think this John is definitely related to Cornelius #1089 as both have links with Myrniong. (John married Anne Butler and Cornelius married Elizabeth Jordon). Even more curious is the fact that John Patrick Shine married Mary Francis Gleeson who was the daughter of Johanna Sheehy and John Gleeson and the granddaughter of Cornelius Sheehy and Johanna Fitzgibbon. |

Owen O'Callaghan and his wife Ellen moved to Collie about 1905?? and opened up a greengrocery shop on a block of land on the corner of Princep and Hutton streets. In 1908 they actually returned to Ireland with their children and Owen's mother. Anne Battista's mother Mary was three at the time. They had intended to settle in Ireland, but finding this difficult they returned to Australia again after six months and resettled back in Collie. Owen died on 14/6/1957 at 82 years of age and is buried in Collie. (Source, gravestone and cemetery records). Ellen died on 13/11/1934 at 57 years of age and is buried with her husband in Collie. (Source, gravestone and cemetery records). They had ten children . Witnesses at the wedding (1902) were Catherine Teresa Kilderry and Michael Thomas O'Halloran.2 |
