The following intelligence is from an earlier voyage: Tornado 1858. Fully rigged ship. 1229t, Captain Robert Creighton: Liverpool, 20.5.58 - Melbourne 20-25 Aug - Sydney 29.8 (& onto Bris[bane] in Clarence; Diary of a Medical Parson, (Rev.Benjamin Gilmore Wilson, with a break in narrative 9.6 - 19.8, but diary then carries on to Sydney.) "Diary" published in 3 instalments in The Ulster Link Mar/Apr, May/June, & July/Aug 1980, (by H.Stuart Patterson, Queensland). Typescript copy of the above serialised account, *Mitchell Library, Sydney; A copy of the original diary, currently in the possession of : Mrs. Kerry Dickson, "Amaroo", RMB 5183, Colac, Victoria, 3249, Austalia. Log of Logs, vol 2. I can't confirm whether this is the same ship but I also found this item. The Tornado was the former Pampero, 1200 tons, built for the Confederate States during the Civil War in America. Renamed under the British flag, she was captured by the Spanish Frigate GERONA during the Spanish-Chilean War, August 1867. Quite a fuss ensued with England flexing the muscle of her fleet before she and her passengers were returned. Source: www.chignecto.net/cwa/newsship.7 Bridget (Patsy) Sheehy and Thomas Gaynor were living at at "Moor View", 37 Albert Street, South Melbourne, Victoria. Research Notes According to family lore a conversation between the two fathers, William Sheehy of Duncaha and Thomas Gaynor of Kildimo, resulted in the arrangement of the marriage between Bridget (known as Patsy) Sheehy and Thomas Gaynor. Shipping documents list Thomas Gaynor jnr, age 28, emigrating on Oct 1863 and Bridget (Patsy) Sheehy, age 16, on March 1864. The age given for Bridget on the marriage certificate, when compared to the age given on the shipping document, indicates a discrepancy of ten years. This is probably a mistake by the emigration clerk but it was said that the family sometimes put their ages down to obtain a cheaper fare. Bridget and Thomas ran a very successful carrier business and became well respected and established residents in South Melbourne, formerly known as Emerald Hill because of the large number of Irish residents. They encouraged their relatives to emigrate, and when necessary, subsidised the fare which was repaid in weekly instalments when the "new-chum" was established. He emigrated on 14 October 1863 travelling on the Great BritainLine: James Bain Line of British and Australian Ex-Royal Mail Packets and the Eagle Line of Packets; Ship Master: John Gray; 1733 tons; voyage 90 days; 530 passengers.2 Thomas Gaynor and Bridget (Patsy) Sheehy were living at at "Moor View", 37 Albert Street, South Melbourne, Victoria. Thomas Gaynor was a builder and road contractor. Research Notes: In Dec 1863 Thomas, age 28 years, travelled to Australia on the Great Britain. This would have made him born 1835. The calculation for the date of birth is taken from various documents, shipping, birth and marriage. Very often there is a variation in the result. Thomas was a contractor who built roads, bridges and transported cargos from ships to warehouses. He was also a sub-contractor to Vaughan Cartage Contractors who had built up a vast empire, the largest in the Commonwealth. In 1911 Bridget Ellen, youngest daughter of Thomas Gaynor, married Daniel Ernest Vaughan amalgamating two very entrepreneurial families. In 1927 the Vaughan family won the contract for the building of the ‘Shrine of Remembrance' on St Kilda Road, Melbourne and subsequently Thomas obtained work on tis prestigious project. It is interesting to note that a Richard Gaynor age 30, travelled to Australia in February 1863 on the Great Britain They are possibly brothers but this is not proven. |

Five emigrated to Australia. The sixth child, Corneliries, stayed at home to look after the younger members of the family and his mother. After his death the house went to his nephew, Frank O'Connor. John Sheehy was christened on 5 May 1850 at Coolcappagh and Kilcolman Parish, Duncaha, Co Limerick, Ireland; Maria Sheehy Matrina, was the only sponsor. My Irish researcher thinks that Matrina possibly means Godmother.1 He was the son of William Sheehy and Mary Connors. John Sheehy sponsored the christening of Ellen Pierce on 12 November 1862 at Coolcappagh and Kilcolman; the joint baptism sponsors were uncle John Sheehy #1001 and aunt Bridget (spelt Brigid in the register) Sheehy #993.1 John Sheehy sponsored the christening of Patrick Shine on 23 December 1866 at Shanagolden Parish (St Senans), Shanagolden, Co Limerick, Ireland; the exact relationship between the family and the baptism sponsors, Catherine Sheehy #3015 and John Sheehy #1001, is unknown but it is assumed they are closely related.2 John Sheehy sponsored the christening of Henry Shine on 1 January 1873 at Shanagolden Parish (St Senans), Shanagolden, Co Limerick, Ireland; The exact relationship between the family and the baptism sponsors, John Sheehy #1001 and Johanna Sheehy #996, is unknown but it is assumed they are very closely related.2 Research Notes: Nothing is known about this John Sheehy but Terry Shine (West Australia) and Marlee Creaser (USA) said a John Sheehy b.1834 came to Australia in 1862. I checked the shipping records for Victoria and found that a John Sheehy, age 28, travelled to Melbourne on the Great Australia arriving in September 1862. Unfortunately the dates don't tally up. John Sheehy born 21 Oct 1832 is assumed to have died before 1850 and John Sheehy born 5 May 1850 would have only been eleven years old. Also, a John Sheehy is a sponsor in Kilcolman Parish after 1862, 1866 and 1873. In November 1862 John Sheehy #1001 and Bridget (Mrs Thomas Gaynor) #993 were joint sponsors at the christening of Ellen Pierce #1066. Also, in Decrmbet1866 John Sheehy #1001 and Catherine Sheehy #3015 were joint sponsors at the christening of Patrick Shine #322. In January 1873 he and Johanna Sheehy #996 jointly sponsored the baptism of Henry Shine #596. The exact relationship between the sponsors and the principals cannot be verified but it is assumed they were closely related. In Ireland if a child died, it was common to name a later child by the same given name, particularly if the deceased child had been named after a grandparent. If there are two children both named John -- and this is possible -- then more research is required New shipping intelligence received April 2004 from David Bedford Whilst searching the passenger list for the Auckland, departed Glasgow in 1875 bound for New Zealand, David not only found his ancestor, Thomas Nestor, but also noticed a John Sheehy, aged 23. Both were listed as native of Limerick. Although there is a small age discrepancy, it is quite possible that he is the John Sheehy born 5 May 1850. |
