Images of Creswick
Creswick is a small town approximately 18 km north of Ballarat in Victoria Australia. It was one of the central communities that developed because of the gold rush in 1854, and it is central to "Our Family History" as a large number of the Iles, Wards, Sanders and Guilfords lived and worked in the district. A visit to the Creswick cemetery is proof enough as there are well over 100 of our decendants buried there. Their occupations were miners, mine managers, labourers, carpenters and associated industries.
Ward Family
Jonah and Rachael Ward migrated to Australia from Northumberland England on the "Royal Standard" in 1863 along with their children George, John, Isabella, James, Jonah, Mary, Thomas and William. They eventually settled in Creswick.
Pratt Family
Joseph and Mary Pratt (Shears) migrated to Australia from England in 1853 on the "Monteagle". Their children George and Ruth travelled also. However both of them died at sea. In addition there were two others in the party - Joseph's brother George and his wife Charlotte . Joseph was a carpenter and settled in Melbourne where he built four houses at 21 to 27 Jackson St Toorak.
Hagan Family
Robert Hagan married Agnes McMaster in Ireland in the year of 1857; very soon after Agnes migrated to Australia and rejoined Robert, who was a ships navigator - he jumped ship in Melbourne. The two of them followed the Bendigo gold trail and settled in Lamplough (Central Victoria). Between 1860 and 1873 they had seven children; five boys and two daughters. It is believed that Agnes came to Australia on the "John and Lucy" in December 1858.

Sanders Family
It is not known when James
Sanders came to Australia. He was born about 1828/29. His exact birth date is not
known but is assumed from his age provided when he married Eliza Iles on the 6th June 1854
at the Cathedral Church of St James, Melbourne. Eliza was born in Brighton, Sussex,
England.
On their Marriage Certificate, James gives his place of birth as St John, New Brunswick,
and his parents names, John Sanders, and Eliza Tabor. Eliza's parents were William Iles,
and Elizabeth Guilford, both of whom are buried at Creswick Cemetery, Victoria.
James was 26 when he married Eliza, and was living in Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne,
as was Eliza and her family.
James and Eliza's first child was born in Melbourne in 1855, the second, Ballarat,
Victoria, 1857, the third at Creswick in 1859. All subsequent births to James and Eliza
are at Creswick, (the last 1879) with the sole exception of their 10 child (1874) at
Bungaree. It is understood that James worked variously as a Miner, Carpenter and
also as a Carter.
Hansen Family
Hans Truelson Hansen was born in Denmark in 1832 and migrated to Victoria on the "Africa" in 1857. He was a miner at home and headed for Sandhurst to take up his trade. He married Caroline Hollander in 1865 and they had six children.Kelly Family
