AUSTRALIAN ANGLO-INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF BRISBANE INC.

                                              Introducing
the Australian Anglo-Indian Assn. of Brisbane Inc.

                               Founded 18th August 1996
                               Incorporated 17th October 1996

                                              Our Vision

                               To co-exist in harmony celebrating
                               the uniqueness of the Anglo-Indian
                               culture whilst sharing our heritage
                               with the wider community.

A group of interested members of the Anglo-Indian community formed the inaugural Anglo-Indian Association of Brisbane on 18th August 1996.

The necessity to establish an Association, particularly in Brisbane, was to cater for the needs of the community, many of whom had set out on very arduous paths to create a new life away from their parent country and families.

While it is vital to integrate and foster our multi-cultural society, it is also important for us to maintain our heritage and to contribute positive cultural aspects into the Australian community.

Our objectives, apart from providing social activities for members and their friends, is also to provide support and care for our Senior Citizens, as well as encouraging our youth through sponsorship for higher education and sporting achievements.

By becoming an Incorporated Association, which is recognised by the Government, we have the ability to secure loans and grants to further our cause.

In order to fulfill our objectives, it is essential to gain the strong support of the community. It is harder for a few members to achieve our goals, therefore we ask for your combined assistance. Together, we can and shall become as successful as the other Anglo-Indian Associations in Australia.

The objects for which the Association is established are:

i.   To provide and promote social, sporting, cultural   and recreational activities for members and their guests.
ii.  To provide and enage in those activities that offer   financial and other welfare assistance to people both within and outside Australia.
iii. To promote Social, sporting and cultural links  between other groups and societies with objectives and purposes similar to that of the Association.
iv.  To develop, co-operate & maintain close links   with/or affiliate with other associations or clubs in Australia or elsewhere whose aims and objectives  are consistent with those of the Association.
v.   To undertake such other activities as are  incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects.

LETTER PUT OUT BY ROYCE MUPRHY TO HELP ANGLO INDIANS IN INDIA IN JULY 2004.

Dear Fellow Anglo-Indians,

I write this letter to you in the hope that you are a subscriber to the only international Anglo-Indian magazine, “Anglos in the Wind” published by Les D’Souza in the United Kingdom. This magazine is edited, printed and distributed in India by Harry Maclure. It also receives the assistance of Jillian Maclure, Kenny Fernandez and Ronilla Long in India together with Reggie and Naomi Heiden from Melbourne, Australia. Reading this magazine from cover to cover warms the cockles of my heart. Please become a subscriber and experience this warmth. Its significance to me has increased since the August 3rd 2003 issue in which the ‘editor’s note’ (copy enclosed) had Harry’s dollar a month drive, to help the poor A.Is in India.

My friend, Cornie Brewty visited me to talk about this editor’s note and my first comment was “this is what many of us dream about”. He said “We need to get off our butts and start collecting a one-off donation of $20 from every AI we know, as collecting a dollar a month is too tedious to even think about”. He went on to suggest that since my wife, Myrna and I were going to the Reunion in January 2004, we could take what we collect and ask the committee of the international federation of AI associations to run this charity fund. My thoughts flashed back to my financial difficulties in the 1940s and 50s in India. Any source of help would have brought comfort in those times of despair. With this in mind and with the support of my wife and the committee of the Brisbane AI association on that memorable day in November 2003, I decided to get going.

Armed with that copy of Anglos in the Wind and a 10-line note explaining the change to a $20 one-off donation, I visited family and friends. This personal approach with some explanations to donor’s queries, which came to mind as they were asked, enabled me to go to the reunion with $1300. While there, I met Harry Maclure, David Samaroo (president of the AI Association UK) and many other AI stalwarts from around the world, told them of my efforts and with their help, conceived the name “International Anglo-Indian Relief Fund”. At the federation meeting, David proposed that the Federation run this fund, but the committee declined. So David volunteered that the AI Association of the UK would take on the responsibility of running the fund. Encouraged by David’s willingness, I continued collecting donations in Melbourne and by the 28th of January had a total of $2381.

During this labour of love, many donors suggested that Rodney Almeida, who is very successful in all his efforts as the secretary of the AI association in Melbourne, would be the ideal person to run the Australian branch of this fund, thereby assuring its success.

Harry Maclure, a few other like-minded friends and I approached Rodney with this proposal and thankfully he agreed with us. I gave him the $2381 and since then, further donations, (including more than $500 collected by Mrs Bernice D’Monte of Brisbane) have increased this to $3081. He has formed an interim committee to run this fund, as an extension of the AI Australasian association of Victoria. This would save the expense that would be incurred if set up separately. Cornie Brewty and I have phoned and written to David Samaroo, explaining the changes and the reasons for them. We requested him to run the UK branch of this fund and he has agreed. Harry has also been in touch with David, and we hope and pray that he and his friends around the world accept the changes. We also hope that they will put their efforts into the success of this international magnanimous endeavour, reaching its goal of eradicating poverty among our community in India.

This is how we see the workings of this fund:

Every willing Anglo-Indian (several thousand) makes a one-off donation of $20 or more and as often as they see fit. This fund is to be run in every major city of the world and having a centre in their respective countries. All donations are to be put in a long-term deposit in the fund’s name. Only the interest earned would be sent to Harry, to be distributed to the most needy AIs in India, using current resources. Harry reports to donors through the pages of the Anglos in the Wind. This method will ensure a constant and consistent source of help, and assures the donors that they will not be approached again. However, donors approaching collectors with further donations will also be welcome, as the task of helping the estimated 30,000 AIs living below the poverty line in India is a mammoth mission. But this is achievable. Who collects? Any caring AI who has what it takes to approach the “haves” on behalf of the “have-nots”, who are back in India, unable to help themselves and who were not lucky enough to get away as we did. The personal approach got me $3081. Letters to 200 people got us only $20. The quicker we get collectors, the quicker the help reaches India, so please, fellow AIs, make this request a priority to help bring this mission, stemming from Harry’s idea, into fruition. We all care. Let us take this opportunity to share.

Thanking you in anticipation,

The Hopeful
